I never had a problem- I could happily use my laptop, hairdryer, be charging my phone and ipod and have on my TV. No problem. HOWEVER, the boys downstairs did have problems when they decided to use both Microwaves in their kitchen at once... Really, you just have to be sensible with everything and not use too many powerful things at once.

Faery_Lights,

Do you know what the power rating on your hair dryer is? That would be a real help.

Thanks for your quick reply,

Mike

I had a high power hairdryer and had no problems (if that's any use?)

Hi,
I'm starting this year to study General Engineering at Leicester University. Browsing through the accommodation Resource Booklet, I saw that rooms are only fitted with 2amp fuses. This concerns me, as I have a 450w PSU in my PC, and a 500w Guitar amplifier/hi-fi. Can anyone offer any advice or experience with current based problems at Leicester University Halls of Residence?

Many Thanks,

Mike

Some of the Halls in Oadby have music rooms that you can go and practice your instruments in. You're not allowed to play any musical instruments in your own room. That would be inconsiderate to others if it was so anyway.

Woah, you can't play your own instruments in your room? That's a bit of a bummer, do you think there's any point in bringing my acoustic guitar? (I'll be either in Beaumont or JF)

This given, are the practice rooms still fused to 2amps? See, the maximum power draw on my amp is 1080w, far over 2amps at 240v. It also depends whether fuses or circuit breakers are used, as fuses can tolerate a higher current for a short amount of time.

Asides from this, given that my "guitar amp" is actually a mixer, disco speakers and a reference amplifier mounted in a 19" rack mount case, I would use it to play all my music through.

I don't really want to lug my amp and cabs to Leicester, only to find they blow the 'leccy!

I don't know- I'm not at the Uni yet nor have I seen the practice rooms. It's just what I've read on more than one place on the official website.:s-smilie: That and that I would hate to be disturbed by someone playing their guitars, drums or any other instruments in their room, whilst I'm in mine (my room).:poke: Sorry but someone else should know.

I would suspect that your amp might cause problems. I'm not sure. Maybe try the first term without and if you don't have any problems with the electric, take it back to Uni after you go home for the holidays?

And with plays instruments you've just got to be careful and considerate. During revision time, when you know the person above you is working and during the night are not good times. But during the day, there doesn't tend to be problems as long as you are sensible.

hey, i'm startin at leciester this september (09). i applied for accommodation in one of the halls but realised they got that 2 amp limit, wud be gud to take my decks&stereo (which i worked out is just under 2 amps together) but i dunno how strict the hall people are on usin up the power, any advice?

Instruments in rooms will be hit and miss really, rules will only be appplied if someone complains. If my flatmates played an instrument i would have no issue with them aslong as they did it at reasonable times and were not terrible. Heck most of them have there music annoyingly loud as it is.

you'll be alright, i got a 700w psu in my pc plus lots of chargers/speakers/external hdds + lamp plugged in
