During my first year at uni I lived with my employed partner and my child in our mortgaged house. My finance reflected his income so I got a reasonable maintenance loan and my tuition fees covered. I split with him this April and now live alone with my son who is 13 in the house me and ex jointly own. I cannot take on the mortgage on my own as I don't earn enough from my part time job for the mortgage company to consider it viable despite me being able (just) to make the monthly payments.
I informed the council and they provided me with an exemption for 100% as the I am the only adult in the house now.
I applied for parental learning allowance and it has been rejected as I can't provide a single occupier document for 25% discount on my council tax. This is because I get 100% discount. Student finance state this isn't evidence I'm single despite the letter being solely addressed to me. The council are dumbfounded and don't know what to advise me either!
They have asked me to provide proof of being the only person on my mortgage now. I can't ask I can't take my ex off it even if I wanted too- my home would be repossessed.
My choices now seem to be give up uni and work or not get the money I'm actually entitled too as a single person and not actually be able to support my son while I study! My son who doesn't have a father so there isn't any help there either.

What can I do? I'm at my wits end as a family split is tough without not being able to claim what I am entitled too. I feel I'm being penalised for being a parent?

Hi, you can complete the Marital Status Declaration form http://ow.ly/d/8nhE to prove you are separated.
Thanks, Isaac

Hi Isaac

I've done this and it's been rejected as I have no evidence other than my council tax bill changing to 100% deduction and solely addressed to me. I have to show I get 25% discount apparently which I never will as students get 100% if they live alone.

The form shouldn't be rejected if you explain why you can't provide evidence, a specialist assessor should make contact to help resolve the situation after we receive the marital status form.
Thanks, Isaac

Thanks Isaac

I have called student finance and explained I can't provide anything more and the guy I spoke to said he'd refer it to someone else, hopefully it'll get resolved. It's really worried me as without the boost of PLA on my own I can't afford to stay at uni!

Yes it should be referred and then an assessor should make contact to help resolve this. Don't worry about this as I'm sure we will be able to resolve this before September.
Thanks, Isaac
