I sent them an email and got a reply wishing me Ramadan Mubarak and telling me about some of the things they'll be doing throughout the year. It sounds really good, I'll be joining. The Psychology society is good too; I got two emails from them haha, they're super friendly.

what's the isoc's email ad????i havent seen anything on the SURHUL site...

Reply 24

^I went on the student union page or something like that where it has a list of the society's and their email addresses. I emailed a few that I was interested in asking for more info on the society and they were all really helpful! :]

Wow!! SubhanAllah!! I didn't get a single email let alone a ramadan mubarak greeting!

The Islamic Society at Royal Holloway had a website but its down for the last couple of weeks! I know most of the brothers and sisters from QM ISOC and to be honest, i don't find anything weird about their ISOC. But we'll just have to see inshaAllah how the ISOC at RHUL is from a first hand experience.:yep:

broaden the views of a anglican christain someone

Reply 29

merci wellerism.

if you mean the meaning as in etmyology/name origin, the word is from an Arabic word for intense heat, scorched ground, and shortness of rations....

Ramadan is the month of fasting, you don't eat anything after the sun rises until the sun sets.

But why the fast? and why the rule involving the sun?

Reply 32

Well ramadan is a very holy month in the Islamic calender. It is a month where no food is allowed from the sun rise till the sun sets. This is to experience what the less fortunate human beings faces in countries such as Somali or Sudan.

There is a thing called 'sehri' which is basically eating before the sun rises. You may know that us muslims have 5 daily prayers, and the first one is just before sunrise. So we eat sehri before the 1st prayer begins. When the sun sets, we have our 4th prayer called 'maghrib'. When the sun sets we eat 'iftar' which is to break the fast.

Reply 33

^Yeah in about 4 minutes, the fast is going to open lol. I'm starving!

do you know if the isoc will be having communal iftaars, i.e. breaking our fasts all together???

ohmg i really donmt want to wake up for sehri alone:frown: thats going to be sooooo lonely unless theres other muslims in my hall/floor.

Reply 35

I'm sure they will, i might come to the iftaars some time as well insha'Allah.

You'll make friends man, don't be so negative!

Reply 36

lol i didnt mean to sound negative!!!
(ive just realised i come across sooo cynical/negative/pessimistic on tsr when im nt like that at all. meh!)

Reply 37

So when are you moving out to campus?

Reply 38

I still dont have a place :frown:
I'm 188 on the waiting list
I hear lots of people drop out in the first two/three weeks
What are the chances of me getting a room in the first 2/3 weeks then do you reckon? lol.

im not entirely sure i want to join th isoc. i would love to make some muslim friends and join the meetings, but im not living out so it might b a bit difficult. plus i dont want anyone judging me because i dont wear a headscarf. but i am conscious about missing salah so i do want to pray at university. do u no if there is a wudu room?
