University of LEICESTER- What are the Best Halls Of Residence?

Hi all, can't believe it'sbeen a year since I last posted. Wow.

Well now I have changed from being a Manchester Psychology student to a Leicester History student. It was a major decision- I just wish I would have thought more about my choice and considered my natural strength- writing a good argument and debate.

I got in through clearing and now I need to apply for accommodation. Has anyone been to Leicester? What are the best Halls to live in and have a good time?

Thanks, Liam

Usually people will say one of Beaumont, GMS or John Foster. My favourite is Beaumont, though I'm gonna be in John Foster next year.

Hi I will be at Leicester doing History in September. I have no idea what accommodation is the best so I just put John Foster and GMS.

Lots of historians this year  If you need to know anything about the course I'm happy to answer questions.

have a look at the leicester unis board, there have been loads of posts about accomodation lately and also people have put photos up from the various halls.

the best halls for freshers are in the Oadby Student Village, these halls are: Digby, Beaumont, GMS (Gilbert Murray Stamford), and John Foster (or new hall). Of these John Foster is often advertised as "the best" because it's the newest, all the rooms are ensuite etc. It's also the most expensive hall. In my opinion, all the halls are of a good standard and choosing between them depends on personal preference (i.e do you want catered/self-catered, ensuite/washbasin etc). My favourite hall is GMS, but only because that's where I stayed. Having a "good time" is also dependant on the person, just get involved and talk to people etc, I don't think any of the halls would seriously restrict your ability to enjoy your time at Leicester.

my main advice at this stage would be to apply for accommodation ASAP - especially if you're desparate to have an ensuite room.
Hurrah! So many Historians this year- it's good to see  Any questions, please ask!

I was in GMS, so that was my favourite. If you're looking for Catered I'd say Beaumont was the best, self-catered GMS (Bowder Court) but really, anywhere in Oadby is pretty decent!

I tried to get Self-Catered for GMS, but I checked the status of my application yesterday and I think i've been unlucky in getting that spot since they've only offered me catered in GMS.

What is catered GMS like? Personally, i'm not that mad about the whole idea of catered but if the halls are cool then i'm not that bothered. Can anyone help me out with some advice?

Thanks

I've been offered a place a Mary Gee and I've rejected my offer as I really need an en suite.
I'm thinking of going private, does anyone know if Unite is popular with freshers?
Or can anyone think of halls of residence you can book which are not through the Uni because they seem to be all fulll up :/

Not heard of anyone in Unite, mostly Oadby with the occasional City living.

Regarding the ensuite, you do know you won't get one in second and third so getting used to it in 1st may not be a bad thing?

Yeah, but in private accommodation you'll live in in second and third there is no ensuite option. In three years looking for houses in Leicester I've seen one once (and it was 35 quid a week more than normal), so first year might be a good chance to adapt to this without a landlord who's a ****.
