Intermediate (halfway) refers to the fact that transcription starts in the nucleus and translation is at a ribosome in the cytoplasm and mRNA acts a messenger between these two stages.

mRNA codons are a sequence of 3 bases; either adenine, guanine, cytosine and uracil (replacing thymine)
