Another reason I hate academics: narkiness, pushiness, egotism, their sense that what they're doing is of supreme importance and urgency to the rest of the world, etc. This email from one of our professors to another, replying to a message asking her if she'd done one of the tasks she was supposed to do (some details have been changed):

Oh, we're just *so* impressed.

Bitch.

There are arseholes in the real world too. The problem is that many of these people have never had their bubble burst. I've decided that the next pompous twit I meet is going to get it.

new thread

You wanna be made OP?

:console: alba. It sounds like you've had a really bad experience. I guess academia seems kind of romantic from the outside, I didn't really imagine it to be as...extreme...as you described :frown: I still want to do my MA at least :teeth:
I could get an MEd through Teach First, but it would mean attending classes at weekends in my second year of teaching and then writing a dissertation the following year. It would be reduced fee though. I am very tempted but loathed to give up my weekends. What do people reckon?

Thanks Becca  I hope nobody lets my wallowing put them off - I'm sure at least half my problems with the academy are caused by me being such an oddball.

Re: Teach First: this weekend classes malarkey sounds bothersome, but reduced fees would probably win it for me (depending on how much they're reduced by).

Lol, well if it's any consolation, if you do decide to give up, there's a guy on TF with me who quit his PhD after 4 years to join the scheme. You can still become a teacher...:beard: :p:

Yeah they're yet to let us know how much the masters will cost. I'll see how i'm feeling after my first year and work out if I'm prepared to give up my weekends!

Yes. I've come to despise the company of a good 98% of academics, another factor which leads me to think perhaps academia isn't my ideal career. So many are just self-enthralled, pompous, intellectually vacant snobs.

sorry to hear about your difficulties :frown: something must be seriously wrong if such a high-flying student with a passion for their subject is willing to give it all up.

My little sister got her GCSE results this morning and did really well, so I'm feeling particularly pleased and in a good mood on her behlaf today

Any luck with the PS and research proposal or are you being a good grad student and procrastinating until the last possible moment?

The latter

That's pretty intense. Depends how cheap it is I suppose, though working 7 days a week would be rather gruelling.

For those of you who were following the Saga of the Kettle in the previous GOGsoc, you'll be pleased to know that my other half bought me this little beauty: http://www.debenhams.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/product_10001_10001_18339_330192_-1

I'm happy to report it has a lovely fluid action and a satisfying whistling sound. I think I might get a bit obsessed with polishing it though.

Today I am going shopping in town for my new desk, so I am happy.

haha, I got rid of one rather similar because it was a little too noisy. Making cups of tea at 3am then get a bit problematic...

There's still a link to it in the OP, so you can look back to it and cherish the memories.

Nice kettle Ilex

Huge :hugs: for alba - such a shame you've lost your natural passion for it all. I'm with Becca on the "romantic ideal" of it all but will be interested to see what my views of it all are in a year's time!

i think one of the strangest things about a phd is the weird feedback you can get. as a taught student, you get loads of essays, presentations and exams marked, but when you write a thesis this all stops and you are left with comments and random statements which amount to a pat on the back for motivation (in my case) combined with the impression that your supervisor expects you to do a whole lot more and that what you have done so far is pants. i've spent about 18 months wondering what the **** was going on, and i'm only now starting to get it. if my supervisor simply told me the expectations 18 months ago life would have been so much easier. i can't wait for this "journey" to end.
