Speaking of Hull library, I wasn't at all sure what to think of it when I went along. It was massive, yes, and the view from the top seemed rather special, but there was something not quite right about it all. It felt empty on each floor despite being packed and the work spaces weren't the kinds of desks I like working on. I like a desk that's fairly deep so that I can sprawl out my stuff, but not horizontally. V. fussy. I think I found it too big in a way. I felt like trying to contribute something to a more intellectual conversation for a change.

i dont care if you grow drugs yourself, or buy them from drugdealers. People who take drugs are no better than Nazis in my opinion.

You say you grow them, but what if your operation falters, and you need a quick fix, i think you would resort to buying them, leading to more suffering around the world as children harvest them

you say about amsterdam, but if i went to afganistan i could probably get away with preaching messages of hate to infidels, IT DOESNT MEAN ITS CORRECT.

Drugs are illegal. Murder is illegal. Both for a reason, and if you break either of these laws, you deserved to be punished like the little piece of **** you are

I know this is a bit psychotic, but I once chucked my biro toward the general direction of a group of mindless twits who were chatting away through my mad last minute finals revision. I didn't lob it at them straight away; I was simmering for the entire morning. When they looked at me to find out where the pen had originated from, I calmly stared at them and asked them to shut up, which they did, but then I left because I didn't enjoy the atmosphere I had created. I've never been back to that library since then, I always work at home. When I eventually rule the world, people who speak in libraries will have their tongues cut out.

Snap. Regular desks aren't big enough for me; I now work on a big dining table.

We have really small desks at work, and on that we are supposed to be able to fit a computer and our case files and books and in/out tray and myriad other things.

I tend to pile my files on the floor. Health and Safety can get to ****!

The top floor used to make me want to crow-bar the windows open and jump. Thank god I left science :p:

The little work rooms down by the staircases had that effect on me. I'd rather work on a bench outside a kebab house in Chingford.

I did get told by someone who worked for the uni that the library had that affect on many people - it's why the high up windows don't open.

I can safely say: I've never been to Hull. I was always under the impression I wasn't missing a whole lot.

See, mine was accurate your's however is not. I wasn't born in England ergo I am not English. Occupying forces and disputed territory aside, I was born in the bounderies of the ridings and am, therefore, a Yorkshireman. My flag is the white rose emblazoned on a blue field, and it will drape my coffin when I die.

Heh, I can imagine. I'm usually really good with heights too. I think it was a combination of claustrophobia, the height, the horrible decor, the crappy desks, the view of Hull, the isolation and the Hullites tramping up and down the stairs outside.

I went along really open-minded about the city. I thought it was going to be my firm choice for uni and the campus was really lovely. If I had gone I'd have been reluctant to leave the campus at all though. I remember wandering around the city with mates and finding that what felt like the main shopping center was based around a Wilkinsons and a Subway. The people traipsing around on the streets in search of cats to main and slaughter weren't very friendly either. It was a massive disappointment. I was staying overnight (TSR hospitality ftw) and we spent most of the second day playing pool in the SU. Normally I explore new places as fully as I can.

That god awful grey concrete doesn't help either...

I detest Birmingham's main library. After the Upper Cam and the Duke Humfrey, it all seems so brutal and grey :frown: I do love the Barber Institute's little art library though, it's cosy and well-stocked.

Is anyone here rich enough to join the London Library, or to have used it for research? What's it like?

Cardiff is due to get a brand-spanking new central library next year. Looks amazing. But that probably means fewer books and stuff.

Da Bachtopus, do you remember that Varsity feature on how easy it was to steal from the UL? They got someone to grab some books and chuck them out the window to their mate who just cycled away? If you're keen, I want to get the entire Adorno in German sometime - there's like 20 volumes of it, but it's ****ing expensive.

I like those. No-one bothers you and it's pleasingly ascetic.
