AUB vs UAL

Hey everyone,
I need some advice. I have applied through UCAS to my picked out universities for film course and have narrowed them to two: Arts University of Bournemouth(AUB) and University of Arts London(UAL). I was sure that I was going to UAL, maybe the fact that it was in a big city like London, but I have researched some more and it seems to me that AUB has a better film production course than UAL. Could somebody help me out and give some advice on what should I pick and which is better? Thankful for any messages/advices!
PS. My application for film practice UAL was unsuccessful, but they offered me an alternative “Film and TV”. However, my application for film production at AUB was successful which I am proud of because I heard others saying that it is quite competitive to get in.
Which UAL college have you been given an offer for?

Do you want to study Film & TV ?
Do you want to live in a big city or a small city/large town? What sort of city are you used to living in?
Have you visited South London? Would you be happy living there or would you want to live elsewhere in London and commute?
Have you visited Bournemouth? It's about 15-20 minutes from the city centre to campus on bus or bike - would you be happy with that sort of commute?
What sort of things do you like to do in your free time?

Hi, I am currently faced with the pretty much the exact same dilemma! I have to choose between UAL or AUB for either film practice, or film production. I am mainly concerned with the course and which school is better for my specific major or field. Do you have any recommendations on which one may be the better choice in terms of studying film and later career prospects? Thanks so much! 😀

Hi there,

We’re so happy you’re interested in studying Film with us we’re particularly proud of our BA (Hons) Film Production course hereat AUB.The course sits within the Bournemouth Film School, a collection of courses we offer that mirror the Film industry. We understand how important collaboration is for the creative process films can’t be produced in a bubble and knowing how to network and connect is crucial for your career. That’s why we bring together students from Make-up, Acting, Performance Design, CreativeWriting, VFX and Costume to work together. Speaking of Costume, alumna Eleanor Bull recently won both an Oscar and a BAFTA for her Costume Design work for Poor Things (at the BAFTAs she was up against another alumna, Sophie Canale, for her work on Saltburn). Recent alumni from Film include Molly Manning-Walker (director of BAFTA Nominated How to Have Sex) and Luther Ford (Prince Harry in the Crown). We also offer an optional placement year to give you real-world experience.

We noticed you commented in another thread about choosing between UAL and AUB so wanted to cover a few things over here too. London is the very definition of a big city, but Bournemouth offers a slower pace of life (we were recently featured in the Metro for offering a more laid back way of life https://metro.co.uk/2024/03/03/seaside-town-named-laid-back-capital-uk-everyone-sick-rat-race-20389423/). Our campus is intentionally small and walkable, designed to encourage collaboration, crossover and conversation between courses and disciplines. As far as Cost of Living goes, Bournemouth was also ranked the most cost-effective university location in 2023 by NatWest (https://www.natwest.com/life-moments/students-and-graduates/student-living-index.html). We can’t comment on where London falls on cost-effectiveness, but it can’t be seen anywhere on the top ten of that list!

Ultimately, where you choose to study should be entirely your decision making sure you’re well-informed and confident that it’s the right uni for you is the most important thing. We can tell you how brilliant AUB is, and how lovely the sandy beaches of Bournemouth are, but if the course or the location aren’t the right fit then you should go with what feels right. With that said, if youhave any questions for us we’d be happy to answer them for you hear or put you in touch with current students or course teams.

Hopefully see you in September,

AUB ☀️
