Hi, I'm 15 years old and my high school is asking for college applications by July, I haven't been able to do an open day due to covid but I have an idea that I want to do a level dance. My problem is I am a ballroom latin dancesport dancer and have been since I was 3 years old but I have never done any other style of dance and the college course does ballet, jazz , commercial, tap and contemporary dance styles but I'd still really like to have a go but dont know whether I would be too in experienced in these dance styles to do this course. I have honours in exams for ballroom and latin but it is a drastic change , if anyone could help me out on what I should do it would be really appreciated x

Hello! I did A Level Dance and loved it, however my specialism was Ballet and Contemporary. There were people in my class who had trained in Ballroom and Latin and they did just fine. I will say however, that when I did it, the final performances had to be in either jazz or contemporary most of the time- I'm not sure if this has changed now. When I took mine, we still had AS subjects so people could drop it if they wanted to. Have you got the opportunity to talk to the person in charge of the A Level? They would be able to give you specific information. The other option would be to select it and see whether you could swap courses in the first few weeks if you didn't find that you enjoyed it or were concerned about your ability. I wouldn't let this put you off though as after all, you will be learning techniques in these styles and practising them regularly and they aren't expecting to see Royal Ballet standard dancers
. Another option would be to see if there are any classes near you that you could take before the course starts to try and build up some experience? Or even using YouTube classes. Good luck with your choices! Hope this helps a little bit

Thankyou this really helps, I'm gonna do a virtual open day at the end of the month and ask the questions, but this has definitely given me some insight, my dance school I'm currently at also does different styles of dance so it might be that I ask for some more lessons thankyou so much xx
