For Those Who Are At Uni/Been.. Please Reply.. Thanks :D

Hi, thanks for looking for a starters.
Basically; Im interested in doing a Journalism degree at uni, starting in 09. My AS grades wern't brilliant but Ive had a pretty tough year this and it made my grades suffer. But anyway for those who have knowledge of uni's and what grades they want please could you tell me what uni's I should be aiming for with the grades CDDE.. Now obviously next year my grades wont be this low, Im aiming to bump everything up atleast one grade, basically im aiming for BCCC.. I know this is a long shot but I want to get into a good uni and I realised that I ********d up this year..

Im at the moment looking at:
Nottingham Trent
Leceicster DMU
Portsmouth
London Of The Arts
Lincoln

Am I over aiming myself here?

Any advice would be greatly appreciated thanks as when I go back to school a week Wednesday we HAVE to have decided on our choices because our school likes being 'organised'.

Many thanks. **CutiePie**

why cant you look at uni prospectuses yourself? also 80% of people get the same A2 grades as they did for AS, so unless you think your special, then just aim low - that way you avoid disappointment

Portsmouth give offers of BBB for their journalism courses. So you might not get on too well there. I can't help with the other courses much.

The key is experience. If you have tons of work experience, then you'll stand a good chance of getting offers. If you have none or very little, then you might not.

Oh right, yeah that should be good. Especially the weekly articles! Some unis will ask for a portfolio of articles, so make sure you get that sorted nice and early just in case!!

TBH, all my offers were BBB/BBC, so do really well in your retakes and hopefully your work experience will carry you a lot. And an awesome personal statement and reference, lol!

Good luck

I don't get how ppl with D in English Language could become successful journalists ?! I just don't get it?! If you are to be good, you have to be able to get an A or am I wrong?! It's like being engineer with D in maths or a physicist with D in Physics...

Thanks; I have everything ready;; god im too prepared hehe!
What are you studying? Journalism Im guessing  Have you started yet?

And to the other person; as I said, if you had bothered to read; my grades slipped because of personal reasons and what happened during the year. Stop with your stupid comments.
1.First and foremost RESITS!!!
2.Consider defering and not applying at all this year and apply next year when you also have your A2s, a year out would be a great opportunity to earn money therefore less debt and gain valuable work experience if possible
3. Apply this year have a range of choices aim for at least one uni that asks for a maximum of 300 ucas points (BBB), maybe 3 that as for 240-260, and then your insurance thats less than 240

If you work to improve your grades, you may well just do so! My A2 grades went up from AS (Bs and Cs to As), and if I'd done as well at AS I would've been looking at at least 2 As (let't not go into Spanish :o: ). Shame I didn't do so well for AS

Well i didn't do very well at AS, i got C maths, C ICT, D Pyhsics and U ICT double. I managed to improve them by resiting quite a few exams in my 2nd year and ended up getting AAB at A2 (dropped ICT double). I wouldn't say aim low. If you work hard you can still get some good grades.

I had a friend who just graduated from History and Journalism at DMU and is aiming for a career in Journalism. He believes that DMU is one of the top universities specialising in this particular subject.. I also know a few others who've also graduated from Journalism at DMU and have seemed to enjoy the course.

Hope this helps

Thank-you, hehe I am planning on resiting most, I can't believe my results came back so bad but my year has been tough.

Im applying for 09, but don't want to defer a year so im just going to work my butt of this year in my A2's

Do you think it would be reasonable to apply for a uni that requires quite high UCAS points and then one like Lincoln that doesn't require alot so then I have a broad range of uni's that I can have? I just feel a bit silly when all my friends are asking where Im applying for, like it sounds like I dont know where my grades are going..

Thanks.

Thanks; I must say when I went to the open day there for Journalism I was amazed, they were the most organised uni I had been to for an open day and were very polite, welcoming and offered some good courses. Even the students that were helping out were like really friendly whereas another open day I went to was a complete shambles.

I am not talking specifically about you, There are many others in same situations and I just don't understand what is happening...It's the same here in my country, ppl that cant write and speak prorperly want to become journalists and then the whole country laughs at their incompetence once they "graduate" (get drunk every fortnight) and get a job. I see it's the same with many in UK cause so many ppl apply for such specialized degrees with Ds in the most important subjects and expect to be successful - I can't see how one that can't do well enough in college would do so much better at uni where standarts are certainly higher (unless u go to Kingston, Westminster or some other crap where u only go to get drunk and not study)

I also wanted to become journalist (once upon a time) but I understood I am not any good at languages and just switched to a more appropriate degree for my skills. You should realy have some special reasons that stopped you and got u to Ds and E...otherwise I don't see the point of such degree...sometimes there are truths in life that are to be accepted ;/

For the most part, I don't think A levels show much of anything, apart from a propensity to work to memorise what your teacher has told you to write, or the understanding of how the markscheme works.

I agree that if you haven't grasped the English language (spelling, etc) then you shouldn't bother, but A level grades, and whether you can get 100/100 is insignificant until you get to independant study and don't merely have to jump through hoops

I understand where you are coming from and yes I did have a good reason to have slipped. My E was not in English so therefor you have nothing to complain about. Now as I said before I have very good reasons why my grades slipped but I am not willing to share this with you. The head of Sixth form has heard my reasons and understood and acknowledged that I didn't have a very good year and believes I can do better on how I achieved in modules, practices and how I achieve in lessons etc. So please just keep out on whats my business with why my grades were so bad and if you cannot reply to question asked with a reasonable reply then do not reply at all as I am not here for criticism but here for replys that will help me decide.

And yes Im sure I want to become a Journalist.

I went to do Work Experience for a week to see if I really was cut out for the Journalism industry.
I got the editor to test me and be honest with me, and she did all these and at the end of the week said she thought i'd make a good Journalist, also she published 5 of my articles in the following weeks newspaper that I had written my-self.

One of the problems with me is I am not enjoying my time at Sixth-Form; I Find it a bit of a waste of time, I know what I want to do in my life, but we are not even doing anything about Journalism in English Language and its frustrating, because I want to spend my time learning about it, but A-levels are in a some respect holding me back as I have to waste 2 years doing these until I can get to uni and do what I want to do. Sorry if that seems all abit mixed up, but I know what I mean.
