Judo as a sport

I want to add a sport to my personal statement, and I might take up judo/kickboxing/karate at my college as an extra curricular thing. It is a sport I want to take up anyway. I need one for my personal statement, and id be a new starter to it, so how would I write it up, when the time comes?

Is it a case of saying 'i partake in judo blahh blah blah times a week for the past year' or something like 'i am on my colleges judo club' etc. etc.

what are good ways of writing sports up? thanks.

It depends how much other stuff you have to write about. Some people get by just mentioning the sports that they play if they have other extra curricular things.

If you want to mask how long you've been doing it, maybe try something like "I currently enjoy being part of the college's judo club. Through my commitment to this sport I have developed my (eg) teamwork skills and it has helped me to maintain my physical fitness."

Anyway, it's hard to give advice without seeing anything, so I'd recommend posting in the Personal Statement Forum (it will only be visible to trusted people already in uni) and you'll find lots of examples in the library.
Just mention it unless it really gave you some significant life experience.

Please don't say "I partake..........."

Nobody uses words like that (apart from the Queen) Just speak/write normally.

Bump.

Does anyone know what type of build is best suited to judo? I know that there are different weight classes... but for example, in one of the middle weight classes (say 70kg), would it be better to be tall and average build, or short and stocky?

What type of build are most judo...er..people?

As a general rule stockier judoka tend to have an advantage. They have a lower centre of gravity which makes them harder to throw. Taller judoka do benefit from greater reach however, and longer legs can be useful for certain techniques. Certainly every time I've seen competitions, it's usually the short stocky ones who dominate.
For the record, the #1 Judoka in the world currently is 6ft7 and has very long legs. Generally, it is true to say that a lower centre of gravity helps, but there are techniques to suit most different builds. I'd say the most important thing is to be reasonably strong for your weight.
