Where is one supposed to gain experience in the Meteorological industry?

I have a Meteorology Degree and I am struggling massively to get a job. I have very limited work experience (2 month internship not related to Meteorology)

I went to the Assessment Day of a well renowned Meteorology company twice and was rejected twice. I spent £400 and flew for 400 miles, staying overnight in a hotel on both occasions. I don’t mind doing this when it’s not wasting my time and resources, and the odds aren’t stacked against me.

I feel that this company was dead set against hiring me, from day dot. I have a Meteorology degree which ties up really well to the industry and this company, but no go. Each time I asked for feedback, it took them weeks on end to get back to me. The feedback was always very vague, and gave me no genuine opportunity to improve myself. How am I supposed to get a job within the industry if the industry leaders are not willing to help me or guide me?

I have my own weather station and I continually monitor the weather on a daily basis, both through my own data and weather models. So I do have a genuine interest in the weather. But this seems to mean nothing to this company. This is something I don’t get, why would a company reject someone for a trainee position, who has a Meteorology degree and their own weather station? Why is it that not enough for this company?

I don’t know if my lack of experience is the reason for a lack of success. I am willing to work on that, but I don’t want to apply to this company again, only to be rejected for a third time. I am not a hopeless, useless person, but this company gives me the impression that my resume is useless to them.

I have been struggling to get ANY job at all. I have been trying to find an internship related to Meteorology and I am struggling to find ANYTHING.

How can I gain practical and useful experience in the Meteorology industry so that I can get a job within the industry? I would like to get out of this rut and I would be willing to work for free if it helped me.

What specific job did you and are applying for within meteorology?

The reason for rejection may be more to the fact that you're not the right 'fit' (e.g. personality to fit in to their corporate environment), may not have the skills you need for the specific role you've applied to and also to the fact that there were candidates that had stronger skillset than you.

Have you been tailoring your CV and applications to each industry? I'd suggest using jobscan to see if your cv matches the job ads closely. Honestly I feel you because I have experienced the same. Its really difficult to get a graduate job as recruiters create more hurdles and are often looking for the perfect candidates. The only way to get some of them is to build your work experience with transferable skills, such as involving yourself in a complex charity project where you have a lead role (, working full time for any role with a similar and reapplying again. Try using your personal network to see if there are opportunities (e.g. LinkedIn, family friends and friends), this seems to have worked well for some of my friends.

I applied for Operational Meteorologist positions. I would like to make progress in some way towards getting into the industry.

I don’t know how to do this.
