1 week to go for Results Day

:eek::confused::eek::confused::eek::confused::eek::confused::eek::confused::eek::confused::eek::confused:

Well that's come round pretty quick lol. Even though im working at home, the past few weeks are just flying by right now. Well we took advantage of going to a restaurant, went for a few walks and all of that. And now results day is fast approaching. TSR is buzzing with lots of worried students as well as uni whatsapp groups. Although daughter has an unconditional, its still worrying time as everyone has put all that hard work in for the past 2 years and yet its in the lap of the ofqual gods to decide what you get. And you want good grades to put on that CV too. I really hope everyone gets what they want and gets into their unis/apprenticeships and jobs.

My only advice is for anyone who has a conditional offer, it wont do you any harm in researching clearing unis right now. High chance that wont happen, but if it does, your more prepared to get ringing the ones you like and bagging that place. If thats not an option, then I hope you get to appeal or take that exam and get the place you want
Will catch you in a weeks time and wishing you all the very very very best of luck :crossedf::goodluck::crossedf::goodluck::crossedf::goodluck::crossedf::goodluck::crossedf::goodluck:

 A Level results day

Well shes got her place at Lancaster on an unconditonal.
She checked this morning and she came in all emotional. She was expected really bad grades thanks to Gavin Williamson and the ofqual party.

But she got
A* Physics
A Maths
A Further Maths
A Chemistry.

I have one thing to say and I will make no apologies for this:
IN YOUR FACE OXFORD!
You thought she was not capable and marked her a 6 out of 10 on the scorecard when she needed a 7 out of 10 to win a place, and shes smashed it with all 4 a'levels. You wont deter her through, she still loves you Oxford lol . She still wants a PHD with you so we still love you too. But just for today im sticking out my tongue

Shes off to an amazing university, with an amazing cohort, amazing people, and amazing department, and Dr Sobral, we salute you  Daughters is so so happy and although some of her physics cohort have not made it and appealing, I really hope they will let them in too as shes got a great group there.
She does also win a scholarship on the uncondtional excellence award and the lancaster AAA award too so shes very happy with that also.

So will keep you posted with updates leading up to uni move in.

I hope everyone has got what they wanted and if not, I hope that you do get the grade you deserve on the appeal. Still supporting you all in the hope that England and Wales follows suit and has the centre awarded grades like Scotland has, . lets make some noise and lets hope Gavin and hes offqual gang change their minds.

Scotland were wrong in taking that action. Basically it is favouring this cohort above previous and future years. Every year teachers over predict students to get them into a university. Last year 75% were over predicted and that was with exams being taken. This year over 40% didnt reach their predictions despite an overall increase in pass rates. There is absolutely no justification for teachers actions and action should be taken against teachers and heads who operate this practice. It is totally unprofessional. The fact the pass rate is higher should be enough. More students are getting into their chosen universities than past years. Politicians not having the courage to act sensibly is the problem here.

Every year students complain they didnt get the grades they deserve due to this unacceptable practice We know every year students dont get the grades and this year is no different.

Any students who genuinely believe they have been wrongly downgraded should have the right of appeal and that should be examined by looking at that students work not based on false teacher assessment which have been proved to be inaccurate once again.

Fantastic result! We look forward to welcoming her to the University! We're rather - and justifiably - proud of our Physics team. There are some great people in there delivering really exciting modules.

I agree too  I just dont like the one rule for one and one rule for another scenario we find ourselves in. It is unfair as Scotland now has the advantage of 'better grades' and England and Wales students dip out on uni places to Scottish students, expecially if you need an A* for a course.
AS grades go up to an A, and Mocks, well they are not really a test and the marking was far harsher than the real exam.
If they can look at AS, interim tests, courseworks, mocks overall as supporting evidence, that would be much better than just basing it on one thing. If theres enough evidence to boost the grade its worthy of an appeal.

Many thanks Gordon.
Lancaster is such an amazing uni. And all the of the reviews by students are so positive for physics too. And I love the department and the labs  She is looking forward to the particle physics, and cosmology.

We have plans to see the city and get aquainted with the local area. Hopefully will try and visit end of the month at the uni. Socially distanced and outside of course. We might do the hiking trail round the campus

The system in Wales is that no one will get lower than their AS grade last year. We still use AS but Michael Gove removed it in England so they cant use.

see this chart how high the grades have increased. That is without the lock in for AS and AFTER taking 42% over marked out.

The campus and surrounding area is gorgeous (we're biased, we know!) Our students seem to love it too - here's a video of them talking about how much the people, the campus and the local area make such an impact on their lives and studies.

Many thanks,

Update

Since the CAGS will now be used, the results were :
A*Maths
A*Physics
A Further maths
A Chemistry
So chuffed. daughter had the Lancaster unconditional first tier award of hitting AAA target, but now she has A*A*AA she meets the second tier, and also the scholarship physics award of A*maths, A*physics too

This makes a huge difference. Especially for trips (CERN/Jodrell bank maybe? lol), interviews, future internships, extra unforeseen living expenses

Also finally got a laptop as well. I7 HP 256gb SSD 8GB Windows 10 pro laptop. After 2-3 months of searching, speaking to our IT dept where I work for I7, I5 processors were advised as quite quick, and we cant complain, it's super fast which is perfect for streaming and watching lectures on line . Laptops direct was where we got it from and at good price.

Lancaster City Travelodge booked too for our trip at the end of the month. Going to take in the sights of Lancaster, Morecambe, and revisit Lancaster Uni and maybe have another cheeky Sultans again lol. So more pics will be coming up of course

I've just seen this thread, it's incredibly informative for any parent starting on that journey, it's amazing how you have documented it all!
As the parent of a year 12 student myself, just about to start on university visits with the Covid-19 delay it's really interesting to read from your point of view. Professionally, it's obviously great to hear your reflections on Lancaster too.
I hope you enjoy your Sultan's - they have a restaurant in the city too which is really good. Let us know if you need any other recommendations!

Thanks  My youngest is starting year 11, so will be doing it all again next September with new unis we have not been too. With the eldest, she is not a 'clubby' type of person, and does not drink, so when we saw Leeds, she felt it was not the right place. We was more into the accommodation and is it secure, and if she felt safe; and Lancaster had that

Hi Swansea Jack1, the youngest will be in year 11 this year, but come next year we will be looking in year 12. She wants to study Zoology, so shes looked at Bangor, Aberystwyth, Chester, Hartpury, Harper Adams, Lincoln are the front runners. Bangor shes liking the look of best

Good luck. Places like Bangor and Aber are not the easiest to get too and I dont know if they have Travelodges. When we went to Aber we stayed in a guest house just off the sea front called Bodalwyn. It was really nice but a bit pricey. Slightly more than a Travelodge but really nice. It was a few years ago. Aber has bit of a reputation as a party time. Sounds like it might suit your daughter. Suggest Swansea to her. Is quite well known for its night club street called Wind Street but much bigger than Aber or Bangor.

Hi @Ghostlady,

We're really pleased to see that your daughter is considering Bangor University. We do hope to have Open Day's back operating as normal as possible next year but in the mean time we are running virtual open days to help with any questions the applicants may have around the course, accommodation, finance and student support. Keep an eye on this page for all the latest information - www.bangor.ac.uk/visit/

We also have our current students on hand to help to answer any questions around the course and student life at Bangor on www.bangor.ac.uk/unibudy. We're often described as a small, friendly, student centric city and our students enjoy a varied social life. As well as plenty of bars and a nightclub or two we have the great outdoors right on our doorstep meaning students can also enjoy mountains, beaches and bbq's on the green spaces on and around campus. All our Clubs and Societies are also free to join and with over 200 to choose from she is sure to find something of interest

We're really easy to get to! A short drive down the A55 along the North Wales Coast will lead you directly to Bangor and direct trains run regularly to Manchester, Liverpool and London.

If you have any questions please do ask, we'd be more than happy to help

Hopefully we will be able to welcome you to Bangor soon!

Thanks
Bangor Uni Team

Thanks:smile: When it comes to South Wales, I've stayed at Tenby, Camarthen & Kiln Park and visited Carew castle, Margam castle and Craig Y Nos Castle. So will take a look at Swansea and the city

It is very different to these. It is a city not small times. Something like 15 times bigger than Tenby or Carmarthen. What Swansea does offer like Aber is it is right by the beach. Just over the main road. There are a couple of Travelodge's for you to try. One is more or less in the city centre and the other is on the M4 services
