Hi All,

Thought it might be useful to share my experiences and answer any questions people might have.

I was on the fast stream for a year, really enjoyed my first posting, and left for an SEO role within the same group.

Ask away!

What didn’t you like about the stream?
The low salary and the lack of control over where you live, what department you work in, and what work you do.

How was the culture?
I felt more embedded in the culture of the department of my posting, which was friendly and quite relaxed.

Any interactions with the fast stream I also found friendly, but also a touch pompous and self-important.

Only just started the SEO role so not right now no! I think I’ll go for promotion in 2-3 years.

My placement was meant to be an HEO level role but soon became more of an SEO level role by necessity.

So it’s a promotion formally, but in practice it’s more of a level transfer, just with much better pay!

Absolutely. For a start, if I’d stayed on the scheme I would have got a grade 7 role after 2 more years. As an SEO I could make grade 7 after 2 years but more likely I think it will be 3 to 4.

Also if I’d stayed I would have been a generalist and probably flitted around departments for pay rises and interesting work. Now I’m hoping to specialise in the policy area I’m in and don’t plan to take jobs in anything else.
