A level maths in one year?

I'll be returning for my second year of college in september and have suddenly decided that I"ll need A level maths to get into the university I want to. Is it possible to do this in one year and has anyone done it.

I realise i may have to ask my college but I don't go back for re-enrollment for a while, so any halp would be appreciated.

It's possible. What did you achieve at GCSE Maths? If you didn't get an A/A*, I wouldn't bother.

It's actually surprisingly common; many schools offer courses called "Accelerated Maths" where you do the full A level in one year, then have the option to do AS/A2 Further Maths in Year 13. Your college may well offer a similar course; all you'd have to do is go to lessons with the Year 12s, provided it fits in your timetable.

Ive seen multiple threads about this over in the Maths forum section. So if you search you might beable to find some topics from people in the same situation.

But yeah its possible.
You would have to do C1, C2, C3, C4 and then choose 2 applied units (sometimes your college decides which ones you do)

I'd do 3 in January and then the other 3 in June.

Maths is alot of work, but good luck =)

thank for the quick replies.

And yea, I did my GCSE maths a year early and got an A so I wasn't really concerned with the difficulty level. Guess I'll just have to cross my fingers that my college does it and that It'll fit in with my timetable.

Still stand a semi-good chance of getting into Cambridge then. :p:

Yeah, it's do-able. I did 6 maths modules last year, though it wasn't quite for the full A-level. We did our maths and further maths side-by-side so i had 4 modules for maths and 2 for further maths (i think :s)

I did Double maths at my college. that was Maths A-Level the first year and Further Maths the second. It's do-able. I had 7 maths exams in june of the first year though! that hurt.
It'll be like taking one year of further maths.

If you need it for your course, then there's no harm in trying it for the year.

At least this way you can't look back and think "I wish I....."

7!

Did you retake your January exams or did your school make you take them all at the same time.

Hopefully I'll do fine in January so I'll only have 3 modules left in the summer.
I did the maths A-level in one year, and it was fine, it was just a bit, well, quick.

I did 3 modules in January (basically what everyone else was doing for their AS-Level in June) and the remaining 3 in June, and I'd definitely recommend doing it that way - all 6 modules in June may well have killed me...:s-smilie:

It's not that I need it for my course I just feel that it will be easier than moving one of my other subjects up to an A standard(i go a C in it at A/S). I always found Maths incredibly easy so I think this is the best option.

This is kinda like my last minute effort to get into Cambridge. It never occured to me that they offered the course I wanted and I know I can achieve the grades. Even if I don't get an A, I'll most probably make it into one of my other choices, which I would still be happy about.

Beat this, I managed A level maths in 2 months

Yeah, certainly possible, but also depends on the workload you wish to put in and this is proportional to the square of the grade you wish to get...

As arrogant as this may sound, I'm actually pretty confident i wouldn't need the whole year to get an A. And yeah, I do plan on putting in a lot of effort as I would be amazing to get into Cambridge. I've never really been one for revision but always got good grades, so if I put the effort in all will go according to plan. (maniacal laughter)

If I don't do this I'll always be wondering if I was ever good enough to go to Cambridge.

I did them back in Jan 2008 578/600 :biggrin: --> A

I actually did 9 modules back in Jan starting from September... so that left me with 3 modules in summer for Further MAths 591/600  --> A

instead of doing the required 12 units, my college encouraged us to do 14, to give us a better spread of knowledge.

The maths A level is very easy to 'cram' for. C3 and C4; these two papers are not much of a step up from C1 and C2. Hope this helps.

I beg to differ. C3 and C4 are a huge step up from C1 and C2.
