There's one obvious candidate: Penistone.

Central location, historic market town...name recognition!

I think Scunthorpe should be the new capital
In which case, I think Leicester should be the new capital of England!

We shouldn’t change the capital but I am very in favour of moving all the government departments and parliament from London, to one of the other major cities. Probably Birmingham or Manchester.
Sheffield maybe?

Maybe but I can’t see a reason to pick that city over the other two

Similar population, but Birmingham's not as central as people perceive it to be, and Manchester gets everything that isn't in London. I would've said Leeds, but – with no offence to Leodiensians – they'd be too up themselves about it.

If you’re looking at John o groats to lands end then yea further north than Birmingham.

However, if you look at where the population actually lives Birmingham’s location is the right location.

It basically depends which measure you want to use geography or population.

If the UK capital was quantified on any metric related to population, it'd be London by absolute miles. So I think then taking that same methodology and applying it to "but what if it WASN'T London" doesn't really work out, especially considering how making a settlement the capital will increase its population. I think doing it more geographically works better – all of the UK matters after all!

Not the population of the city but balancing where the city is in relation to the vast majority of the countries population.

Why not Slough XD

But on a serious notice maybe...

Derby, Nottingham, Newcastle, Coventry, Leicester, Oxford, Cambridge, Maidenhead (maybe?), Reading, Berkshire, Woking (?), Manchester, Birmingham, Sheffield, Isles of Wight (?), Brighton, Cornwall (?)

Probably those but idk

Newcastle is too far north.
Reading, Berkshire, Woking, Isle of Wight, Cornwall, Brighton, Maidenhead, Cambridge and Oxford are all too far south.

Derby, Nottingham, Coventry and Leicester aren’t as suitable as Birmingham, Manchester and Sheffield.

You missed off Leeds as the other contender but out if the four Birmingham makes most sense it is geographically central for most of the seats, is a big city and has the all important transport links from all over the country.

On transport it’s probably the only other city other than London that has those links via road and more importantly rail.

I think you've all forgotten about Swindon. Got to be Swindon, right? Bam smack in the middle of the M4. Not too far from London. Perfect!

Wait. No, not Swindon actually. It's pretty dire there...
