Hey! Current student here.
Sheffield has a city campus. (mostly) It has a big main University square though where most of the University buildings are located like many of the Engineering and Science departments, the Students' Union, the Architecture department, some of the big libraries and so on. There's also like a University square for the medical faculty around the hospital and so on. And some buildings are just spread across the city. There are many accommodations available to students depending on which location you would prefer to stay.

Let me know if you need to know anything else!

Hi, were there any lives in Ranmoor or Endcliff. I don’t want to be carrying all my stuff while walking up the stairs. I’m staying in Rivelin F6 and I think the wall is either blue or red, i’m not sure.

Hi
A lot of accommodation does have lifts with the exceptions of a few (usually the shared bathroom accommodation). Although if you do find you are in accommodation without a lift there are many student ambassadors around on Intro weekend (including me) to help move you into the accommodation, so if you are struggling with your stuff we are all happy to help. Let me know if you have anymore questions!

Thanks that's really useful to know! Can i ask what you plan on doing after your course?

Hi there,

My current plan is to work within the plant science industry for two years directly after my integrated masters, then I would like to complete a PhD in a topic related to secondary metabolite production in horticultural or agricultural crops.

Do you think that a career in research is something that would interest you?

Hi there,

Have you got any ideas of the kind of topics you would like to research? Also, would you prefer to do lab-based research or field-based research?

Hi Daniel
I'm applying to Sheffield for next year and writing up my personal statement. could you help? i'm applying for BSc Medical Microbiology which is sort of similar to your MBioSci Biology, so what kind of things should i include in my personal statement.
Also did you do a year in industry?
Hi,

The advice I'd give you is the same I'd give for any course: make sure that you convey your passion for the course and discuss anything relevant you have done in that field (articles or books you've read, volunteering, summer schools, work experience, etc.). Why do you want to do the Medical Microbiology course in particular? What makes you excited about that specific course?

A year in industry is not part of my course however I do know many people completing, or who have completed, a year in industry. Personally, I went to New Zealand for my year abroad in second year.

Hi Daniel,

I’m currently thinking of applying for Biology at Sheffield. Is there the option to transfer between courses in first year? For example, could you transfer to the biochemistry course or biomedical course from biology? If not, how much specialisation is there on the biology course? Is it mainly plant/animal based biology, or could you still have the option to study more biomedical topics?

Also, where is the teaching mainly done for biosciences? Is there a single building for biology or is it spread out over the university?

Last question: what do you study on your year abroad? Does it follow roughly the same curriculum as the course at Sheffield?

Thanks for any answers

Sheffield Uni at the top of the league at the moment and making headlines for Covid 19.

Looks like Sheffield loves its students but is going to be tipped over into special lockdown.

Hello,

The courses within the Sheffield Animal and Plant Sciences department, e.g. Biology, Zoology, Plant Sciences, and Ecology, share a common curriculum in the first semester of first year. Afterwards there will be some modules that are compulsory for students on each of these courses.

It is possible to transfer between courses when you arrive. Biology degrees at Sheffield focus on organismal biology, however you are able to take unrestricted modules from other departments - such as from the Biomedical Science department. Biology lectures usually take place in the Alfred Denny Building, which is the biology building. Labs are usually held in Perak Laboratories, a building that joins onto the Alfred Denny.

One of the major benefits of studying abroad is the ability to take modules not offered in Sheffield. Whilst abroad I studied courses including: "New Zealand Biodiversity and Biosecurity", "Resource and Environmental Management", "Plant Biotechnology", and "Marine Biology and Ecology".

Have you got any other questions?

Would you say the uni buildings are quite far apart? I'm just worried its more of a city uni where everything is far away. Could you walk from ranmoor/endcliffe to lectures?

Hi Rachel!

Hope you are well:smile: I lived in Ranmoor for my 1st year and personally didn't have any problem with the distance and I wasn't very active! Ranmoor and Endcliffe are situated I would say around a 25-30 min walk from the majority of uni buildings. The walk to uni on a morning I thought was quite nice, it's a lovely walk through Sheffield and it was a good way to make friends as I often walked with people I had met on my course and most others did too. Once you are in the 'uni area' around the Students Union I would say all buildings are walkable in 10 minutes or less, this is the time we are given between each lecture to move between buildings (luckily)! It comes down to personal preference, Ranmoor and Endcliffe are the more typical 'social' student halls and that's where the majority of students will stay in 1st year, but there is also city accommodation ,like Allen court, which is lovely accommodation and is much closer to the Uni buildings if that's something you would prefer. I would say the only negative of the city accommodation is that it is less social as less freshers stay there. Can I ask what course you are looking to study? As I can find out how far roughly the accommodations are from that course's department building and this may help you out more with your choice.

If you have anymore questions feel free to ask, all of us on this thread have experiences of living in different student accommodation so you will be able to get some different prospective's on the areas:smile:

Which is the quietest endcliffe accommodation? I know Ranmoor is quieter overall but I prefer a bit of a mix.

Hey!

I've lived in Howden, Endcliffe in my first year and I've noticed that it tends to be more noisy if you're closer to the main walking paths. For example, Howden is right next to the Edge (the building with the pub, café and the rest) and it was a bit noisy on Friday nights or when people were normally going out because everyone would take that path between the Edge and Howden to get to the taxi area. If you'd like a more quiet building, I'd suggest looking on the map to see what's not directly connected to the busiest foot paths. But keep in mind that it also depends (quite a lot actually) on the way your room is facing. My room window was at the back of the building and I never had any issues with it being noisy because the area behind Howden that leads to Yarncliffe (if I remember correctly) was always really quiet. If there's a way to check that, I'd take that into account too.

I hope this helps, let me know if you have any other questions!

I was wondering if they go through your drawers and stuff during an inspection?? I’m currently not in Allen Court and won’t be there until like the end of February. I got an email that they will be accessing your room and I wanted to know how exactly these “health and safety tasks” go because honestly someone going through my room while I’m not there makes me quite uncomfortable.

Hi Abbie,

I lived in Allen Court in my first and second year and I seem to remember when we had room inspections they would literally just open the door, look around for about 5 seconds (whilst standing in the doorway) then leave again. I'm not sure if that would be the case this time round as people aren't in their rooms but maybe worth phoning or emailing Allen Court reception to ask if you're unsure? 0114 275 5036 is the number

Hi,
I guess my question would be directed towards Daniel as he has a year abroad in his course. I have an offer for Mechanical Engineering with a year abroad in North America, and I am very curious as to how the study abroad system works. Do they tell you where you're going, or give you a selection, or you just choose?
What are the Endcliffe Crescent Houses like? Are they as involved with the student life?

Hi Joe!

Thank you for your question, I am afraid I don't have any personal experience with the Endcliffe crescent houses although I do know that their location is really good as it is located on the edge of endcliffe village near to all the other student accommodation blocks so I would say it is very easy to get involved with the student life!

Hope this helps you out a bit, sorry I can't give any more specifics
