I am glad it happened to be honest. UCL doesn't get anywhere near enough credit and too often it is seen as second or third to Oxbridge and the specialists (LSE and Imperial). I can't say I agree with the ranking because its certainly not the case for my subject or most of those i'm interested in but then the Shang Jiao rankings are wack anyway (I totally disagree with the idea of university rankings though).

The parameters for most of these surveys (most notably the Guardian Good University Guide) are a joke.

Shang Jiao is even worse!!!biased towards the US unis. how can you justify putting UCLA, UCSD,Penn,Washington,Wisconsin,U CSF,John Hopkins,Michigan and Illinios above Imperial, ETH and UCL!!!!utter and total ****. Imperial and ETH are the best technical universities in Europe. a whole continent (at least the ones who can afford to consider education anywhere in Europe) aspire to study there like MIT, Caltech and arguably Carnegie Mellon or Berkely in the US. The quality of undergrads is thus equivalent to that of the top US unis. all the unis i mentioned are the middle tier US unis but when you consider that the US top tier consists of like 20 unis you can appreciate how far down you are when you get to the mid tier. the European top tier consists of very few unis mostly in the UK. If you know anything about US unis you will recognise those unis are far below Imperial or ETH standard. I've watched the UCSD Chemistry, Economics, Maths and Biology lectures online and OMFG are the students ******ed. the lecturers have to like threaten them to do work and go over simple stuff 100 times. also the lectures SUCK hard! constant mistakes, no enthusiasm and very simple stuff. the pace of the work was painfully slow and even going through GCSE level stuff. even MIT, the pinnacle of American technical education is miles behind top UK unis in terms of the level of work. Not the work rate but the first year there is just bringing everyone up to A level standard.

how can anyone agree with this?!

    http://www.arwu.org/rank2008/ARWU2008_TopEuro(EN).htm

the world ranking is equally ridiculous but requires some knowledge of US unis which not many UK students have.

Lol, LSE is 85th in that list. I think that's proof enough that the ranking is crap.

I may be living in denial but I can never agree with the Shanghai Jiao Tong University Rankings. It diminishes the greatness of Imperial College.

you are not living in denial, there are AT LEAST 10 unis Imperial should definitely be above in the rankings and a further 10 or so against which a strong case can be made for Imperial.

If all are taken into account, it propel Imperial to rank 3! Yay! Now that is what I need to hear!

edited: Btw, LSE really suffers from the ranking. I wonder whether this is attributed by the weight of indicators used, since there are no N&S category for them.

UCL will never better Imperial in the subjects that Imp actually wants to specialise in, ie science, engineering, medicine. (citation needed )
