I have just finished first year at university and overall have been unhappy and isolated, despite making an effort with societies. I enjoy the course but I'm not sure the uni is right for me. So I'm thinking of moving universities.

My question is, is it better in terms of social life to transfer into the second year at a different uni or restart the degree altogether? Does anyone have any experience with this?

Transferring means this year was not wasted but might be harder to meet people. But if I am able to live in halls as a transfer student anyway it might not make much difference.

most universities wouldnt have space in halls for a 2nd year student, it'd be harder to meet people in second year but could still go well for you

Hey,

I don't think the life would be any different if you transfer to second year mainly because during second year there isnt as many new students compared to first year and third year (those from taking placements and year out after second year) so you might still find yourself in the same situation but on the other hand you might connect well with people there making it work out well for you.
Also student halls normally prioritise the spaces they offer to first years unless its private student hall companies where they take any students.
Also considering the pandemic most universities announced their next academic year to be online or at least begin the first teaching block online which I would say changes the experiences you would expect with socialising and making friends being that there may or may not be as much social interaction.
The decision is up to you cause in both cases there is equal chances of it going the way you plan and expect or it not making much of a difference given the circumstances.

Hope this helps.
