Personally as someone who struggles with confrontation without crying I would write your dad a letter. In it tell him how you feel, ask him questions you would like to know the answers to. Try not to make it an angry/accusatory letter but rather letting him kno your feelings, and end it with exactly what you said here “you would like a better relationship with him”
Then ask if he would make some time to talk things through with you. Either just the two of you or with someone neutral there to help keep it on track.
He may not agree, he may think it’s silly, he may not want to which is an unfortunate possibility but, by showing him how you’re feeling and explaining why, he may understand you better and want to help you understand him better.
