I don't think quotas are a good idea at all, but I'm favour of contextual admissions/offers and WP schemes.

A moronic idea that makes a mockery of hiring people based on competence.

Erm, and what is 'positive discrimination'?
Last I checked, that would count as an oxymoron, no?

It kind of is, but basically some people have pointed out that reserving spaces for minorities in universities and jobs etc based on race alone is still discrimination, just in a positive way. Hope that answers your question!

Discrimination, based on protected characteristics, is never positive.

Yeah, I think the way I worded it was a little confusing, but I believe that’s the term used to describe it? Sorry for that!

Ah, thats what they're calling it these days?
Well its still discrimination, and defeats getting into a college or getting a job based on competence or skill. If I were of an ethnic minority, I wouldnt want to feel as if I was only hired / accepted because of a quota.

You worded it the way that I have seen it worded before. It should be illegal.

Discrimination is just that, discrimination. It is not positive. It would also be negative/ unfair to those who do will not have better treatment. The antithesis of discrimination would be equality and judging beyond the characteristics that people sometimes get discriminated against, or with, for.

Honestly, I’m glad to see these responses, this was kind of triggered by someone today discussing this who said that they didn’t see the problem with it? Like? I just wanted to get people’s viewpoints as I am of an ethnic minority, and like @Synergy_ said, wouldn’t want to be singled out because of that! Thanks for reassuring me ☺️

Discrimination based on sex, religion, race and sexual orientation etc is NEVER positive. There is no such thing as ‘positive discrimination’. It’s discrimination. Period.

Dislike it. Unfair on others and on the person receiving the benefit from it... can't be enjoyable working with people who believe you only got your job because of [insert characteristic].

Positive discrimination is illegal in the UK.

Positive action is allowed.

We looked at it in terms of appointing judges where they do encourage positive discrimination to get more non male/white/Eton judges into the higher courts. As we need a diverse judiciary. It’s only if candidates are equal then they should promote the more diverse one.
Even so, most new judges (at high level) are still white male from eton/oxbridge.
