If you are going to waste £180 of your own money on a mug imagine how easily you'll squander other people's money.
It was a gift. Ie, not his own money.

It's The Mirror, and it's raison d'être is to play identify politics. Ignore it.

He earnt a fortune in the city. If he wants a £1800 mug then so long as he's bought it with his own money, then it's entirely his own business.
Thats inflation for you.

Rishi Sunak is being critiqued for being pictures with a £180 smart mug. Honestly, does anyone actually care!? He's one of the most important men in this country, if he wants a nice mug so bet it.

Many people could afford one who do much less, myself included. Politics confuses me sometimes.

 - a taste of things to come.

I was being hyperbolic - if that mug cost £18,000 and was studded with unicorn farts it'd still be irrelevant to the work scheme.

The mug costs the same as a 200-day subscription to the Mirror. Can't believe there are fools who pay that much for something like that.

Whereas the mug seems decent value.

Everything about his short tenure so far suggests he'll become one of the most profligate chancellors in history.
The guy's stupid rich. £180 to him is like less than a quid to most here and so I really fail to see how it reflects negatively on his financial skills, it isn't like he's blowing all his income on frivolous luxuries and struggling to get by.

What does the mug actually do? What is a smart mug? that's all I want to know. Does it tell you whether the plan to kill more people is working or not?

This reminds me of the time that Nicki Morgan criticised Theresa May for her expensive brown trousers, saying she'd never spent that much on any fashion item. Only for it to be revealed that her handbag was more expensive than the trousers.

Morgan then didn't turn up to appear on Have I Got News For You, so they replaced her with an identical handbag.
