Treaty of Versailles proper messed them up, had to pay that $6.6 billion to France and Belgium. Because of this the workers went on strike in the Ruhr and France and Belgium invaded and took over I think in '22 and then took control of coalfields. Germany printed more money to pay workers and this led to hyperinflation in 1923.

But then there was revolts like the Spartacists in 1919, the Kapp Putsch and notably Hitler's Munich Putsch.

There's also the point about the 100,000 men in the military so they couldn't protect themselves from the French/Belgian invasion.
