The Student Room Group

Sunak is trying to bankrupt an already bankrupt country!

Has Sunak gone mad? Where is the money for all these freebies coming from? You have millions of economically inactive people in this country who are bleeding the country dry year on year! Even before the pandemic with Brexit on the horizon the economy was destined for the trash can and now with all these giveaways who is going to pay for them at the end of the day?

Furlough is just Welfare V2, it should never have been introduced in the first place. No other country has replicated such a generous scheme. All those people on the beaches and parks oblivious to social distancing openly boasted to the media we're on furlough what else you expect us to do?! Stay at home perhaps as the guidance expected you to do.

Also what about that elephant in the room where billions are slurged to fund those who cant be bothered to work, namely welfare?

Rather than splurge billions on discounted wagamama sunak should minimalise or abolish large sections of welfare altogether. The UK welfare budget is 200 billion+ imagine if that was bared down 90-95%+ how much that would save and enable some kind of sanity to the UK budget vs endless borrowing to fund idleness.

What percentage of the UK's adult population is dependent on the welfare state? The welfare state is a big part of British family life, with 20.3 million families receiving some kind of benefit (64% of all families) as per research done for the Guardian, that is shocking in itself.

Look at the list of possible welfare candy on offer:
Jobseeker's Allowance (JSA)
Employment and Support Allowance (ESA)
Income Support.
Housing Benefit.
Council Tax Support/Reduction.
Support with Mortgage Interest (SMI)
Personal Independence Payment (PIP)
Disability Living Allowance (DLA)
Universal Credit
Clothing Grants
Food vouchers
Carers allowance
Tax credit
Incapacity benefit
Maternity Grant
Child benefit/Child tax credit
There are more this just a sample of the benefits buffet on offer..

Sunak should scrap the lot of it and get these lazy sods back to work. Giving welfare to the idle means they have no idea of the meaning of money or the idea you should work and earn your keep. Why should they when they know other fools work on there behalf? Ditch the lot Sunak if you tell someone right no welfare heres a job, your choice you think they are going to keep saying I am too depressed to work?

My friend is a GP he says around 50% of the people who visit are simply trying to game the welfare system and maximise the amount of free money they can get out of the system with pseudo illnesses like fibromyalgia, chronic fatigue and other illnesses that cant be proved. Same for being too depressed to work, another cop out. Also he gets at least 10 requests a day for letter request so they can scrounge a bigger council house. Why bother getting mortgage and working hard to get a bigger house when you can simply go and moan to the council for a bigger one instead? Hes not surprised such a huge number dont bother turning up for assessments he says they either realise the game is up and dont bother or they were too drunk on the day and forgot!

Sunak the only people benefiting from welfare are the likes of Netflix, Sky and the local off licenses. As exposed last week in Nottingham those pitching up to the food bank driving a mercedez while holding a brand new iphone show that the welfare system needs to be scrapped once and for all. Only if you stop giving other peoples money to the bone idle will they be incentivised to get off their butt and do something once in their life. At the minute the welfare gang are kinda bored so now represent a large chunk of the Tiktok community making videos and asking for more money from fools that donate!

I saw an advert on a bus the other day saying drive this bus get 23k. Thats 23k minus tax, NI, mortgage, council tax etc etc

Am surprised there isnt an advert saying do f all and get the equivalent of a 40k+ salaried job for doing absolutely sod all other than filling in a few welfare forms and sitting back!
Thing is they dont need an advert do they given that millions of households are doing it already as ONS stats prove year on year.

Sunak, ditch welfare thats the only kick up the backside that is going to force these idle sods back into work. Why have we got 3 million Eastern Europeans doing unskilled work here because local idle Brits find a combo of welfare, netflix and beer an easier proposition? Stop the gravy train scrap welfare and furlough which is just another name for welfare and get these idle millions off their backside. You wouldnt need to import labour if you didnt have such a large % of the population doing f all apart from full time benefit claiming.

Have a lie down or you will choke on your own froth. I believe most of the welfare budget goes in pensioners. Would you prefer a culling?
You've now made several very similar threads expressing your outrage over people receiving benefits.

Given the amount of free time you devote to the topic, one is likely to conclude that you are unemployed yourself. Maybe you should spend more time looking for a job?

Gosh. What a rant. Well first I will address your 20 million households getting benefits. Well that would be every household with kids and every pensioner then? So you benefitted from that. I trust you will pay it all back?

But seriously, what is the alternative? We could do India where orphan kids sleep in stations alone, begging and pick pocketing for a living, or we could do the US where masses of people have no access to healthcare and benefits are sporadic and variable but where thankfully society give sufficiently to charities to bail those unfortunate enough to fall on hard times out.

As for your understanding of borrowing. The country only becomes bankrupt when it can no longer service its debt. Debt repayments are currently between 60 and 70 billion. Not much in a 800 billion budget. Most people with mortgages will have a bigger debt to income ratio than that.

Was away for a few days working, wonder whats the point paying tax when those on welfare pay zero tax and are better off for it!

Notice that Iceland and Tesco Express have announced they have had to put signs up near the till saying 'school meal vouchers are not to be used for alcohol'.

Really think those on welfare are worse off? Yeah right, tax-free, rent free plus spending money every week for sky and beer. When they spend money on scratchcards head over to the local foodbank as clearly those 'essentials' take priority over food first. This country is a joke and poverty is not being able afford an iphone 11 by definition.

Only fools work in this country and bigger fools work and pay tax in this country as it only benefits those that choose to pay zero tax from cradle to grave!

If you believe people on wealfare are better off than you as a tax payer then quit your job right now and go for it. Nothing is stopping you.

Just think of all those sky subscriptions and wide screen tvs you would be able to afford!

My sister-in-law is on benefits due to losing her job and her husband can't work because of covid. Her husband received a small furlow payment which they used to pay off bills. As a result, their benefits have been stopped. They have no food in, their kids need clothes and if a job can not be got soon, they will loose thrir house. All for no fault of tgeir own. And based on the experiences of the kids in my school it is unlikely that a plush council house awaits. More likely a damp and grotty 1 bedroom B+B for the four of them.

1) So you've not heard of QE then?

2) Imagine if State Pension was abolished you mean?

3) When compiling your long list you forgot 'State Pension' which makes up £100bn+ of the £200bn+

4) Is that because you can't get welfare to equate to a pretax salary of £40k+? On another thread I went through the maths with you even assuming the salaried employee lived in high tax Scotland and had no personal allowance. You didn't reply....

Why have we got 3 million Eastern Europeans doing unskilled work here because local idle Brits find a combo of welfare, netflix and beer an easier proposition?

Exactly why is everyone ignoring that fact. Why do we have 3 million Eastern Europeans working here doing unskilled jobs that lazy idle British scallywags could easily do but welfare pays them more to do f all instead? In fact the welfare gang boast on social media, tiktok etc how they are better off not working. When they pitch up to a foodbank texting their mates with a new iPhone 11 in one hand and cigarette or vape in the other you wonder what their priorities?
Scrap welfare give these toerags a choice of heres a job either do it or your lookout, no freebies and no running to get a sicknote saying too depressed to work either thats been a tired excuse for too long also.

Why have Iceland and Tesco Express had to put notices near the till saying School meal vouchers are not for alcohol? Clearly a sign that welfare is far too generous and the gravy train needs to end now.

Why should QE be done to print money to fund the welfare gangs who choose not to work? Consistently around 3 million household where noone works.

The benefits cap is a myth as there are many exclusions so a little of depression, fibro, back pain and other bs medical conditions means you can claim even more free cash getting welfare of 30k+ doesnt take much effort if you know how to fill forms in and lay on a good sob story to DWP so yes that equates to a 40k salary pre-tax where someone has the hassle of working where those on welfare have the hassle of choosing which netflix series to binge watch or which flavor vape to try.

Only fools work in the UK and bigger fools work and pay tax in the UK to fund the idle feckless millions that roost here.

My parents form a household where no adults work. What do you suggest my 84 year old dad should do for work?

Can't you work through an example?

So you're a benefit scrounger then? Or a fool?

There are countries where there isn't half the handouts mentioned by the OP, and none of this happens. Particularly the Eastern Europe EU member states.

There are also countries where there's even less help from the state, and the situation isn't as bad as in India (where it is so bad, likely because of extreme overpopulation in some regions).

In China for example there are no handouts for unemplyed, but on the other hand they don't tax street trade (not directly).

Instead of forcing people to register businesses, buy expensive cash registers, and pay income taxes, and then spend money on administration that would count all the taxes involved, it's just legal to sell things and food on many streets. People can work, spending money only on their stalls and products they sell, the country doesn't have to pay them any handouts as in big cities they can earn quite enough money on their own, and the state gets some VAT income anyway, as unregistered businesses can't deduct VAT when they buy stuff they're going to sell at the street.

I personally think that state pensions for retired and permanently disabled, and temporary help for unemployed (given they worked before in their life), would have been enough.

It would also be nice if the UK stopped treating the people of Northern Ireland like second-class citizens. They get only half the postgraduate loan you can get in England, and it doesn't even cover university fees, like government didn't want them to study or sth.

I think before you start making assumptions about Eastern Europe and China, it helps to really understand those countries. China for example has a pretty comprehensive welfare state. But at the same time a lot of poverty is hidden or covered up. Saudi Arabia, one of the wealthiest countries in the world has chronic poverty. But you would never see it. It is hidden away and kept under wraps.

Are you really wishing we were like Eastern Europe of China? My goodness! I don't think you know quite how good we have it!
Your point was that without tens of social handouts 'orphan kids sleep in stations alone, begging and pick pocketing for a living'.
I've spent most of my life in Eastern Europe, most of the handouts mentioned be the OP are not availalbe out there and there isn't any problem with orphants on the streets.
Retired people get state pensions, disabled people get state pensions, ill people get state pensions untill they recover, unemployed job seekers get pensions for a few months (if they worked before) that's pretty much all you can get.

Yet there are no 'orphant children begging at streets', beggars are a very rare view (usually they're just drunks who want to get money for a free beer), and unless you're completely unwilling to work, it's next to impossible to be left without a place to live and basic necessities.

Speaking of the Chinese example, it was just to illustrate how can you adress the same problem with different solutions. The Western solution by now apparently is to give money to those who don't work. The Chinese solution is to make starting businesses easy even for those who have little to no money for a start.

The only difference in living conditions between the UK, and developed countries of Eastern Europe, is that cars and electronics are more expensive there, relatively to salaries, and the cities aren't as nice as there were no architecture laws like the UKish ones, and there was a lot of war damage, there are no gangs, and a chance of being stabbed is multiple times lower.

So how is Eastern Europe different to the UK?

And just how do the Chinese make it easier? Do they ignore trading standards and copyright allowing counterfit and dangerous goods to be sold? Do they ignore employment laws allowing people to be hired on terrible terms?

The grass often isn't greener.

No. Because we have a well funded wealfare state and health system. Are you really telling me that if we reduced benefits to zero over night we would get by just fine?
