Which A Levels for Computer Science?

My brother wants to work with computers when he is older, so he's looking into this. What A levels would he need to get onto a computer science degree at University? Also, what kind of grades are we looking at for entry into the course?

I have no idea about anything with computers, so it will be good to have my brother to sort everything out for me, which he already does, but he can't solve eveything...yet

Maths and Physics.
And if you can Further maths.

What kind of grades depends on the uni. For example A,A,A for cambridge or imperial.
Well Maths and Physics are definitely required and Further Maths would appeal as a vantage point (so I personally would suggest doing it).
Also if possible/offered by the college, try doing computing (ICT is just horrendous, don't opt for that, besides it doesn't give u much practical knowledge and when starting at uni, many students have no computing/programming experience beforehand).

Grades would depend on the uni, if he's aiming high like oxbridge/imperial, AAA is standard offer......but to an averagely good uni, I guess ABB is sufficient.

Maths is required, usually to grade B at A2. General offers are AAB, physics can play an advantage, although not required. Or you can do what I'm doing and combine Computer Science with Business Studies: which doesn't require A Level Maths, and looks how you can apply yourself more to the industry and break away from RnD.

Thanks . Our school doesn't offer computing, but our Science department is appauling, so I'm going to see if maybe he'll consider changing schools for A levels (I kind of regret not doing that...).

Thanks for your help! Much appreciated

Google university websites? They'll have the exact entry requirements on there.

most if not all computer science courses dont require computing in a levels. they very important thing is maths

Quick googling gives me an assortment of universities:
Queen Mary - only GCSE maths required
Cambridge - A-level maths essential, further maths and/or another physical science desirable
Manchester - A-level maths required, sciences preferred
Imperial - A-level maths required, further maths preferred
Bolton (lol, I love my hometown) - 5 good GCSEs and 200 UCAS points (CDD).

i.e. maths is essential for good unis.
Maths and Physics for the top universities... If not physics, DEFINITELY maths...

thank you!! you're a star!

Maths - MATHS IS A MUST , do NOT skimp on the a level maths otherwise it'll cut you out of so many unis
Further maths - if you can hack it, do it
Physics/Chemistry - they like physics for the electronic side of things and chemistry is just about physical science which will hep
Computing - Isn't nesscecary at all, if you can take it, then take it

I'm taking maths physics chem and computing, and then further maths AS as well and looking to apply for computer science, just make sure he does maths A2  :yy:

Oh, and if I recall correctly there was someone on this forum who wanted to do computer science at university but hadn't done maths, so he took a year out so that he could do A-level maths so he could get some offers from good universities.
I did Maths, Physics and English Language, with Psychology at AS. Maths is a must, Physics is a bonus.
Eww is physics really needed?

I am quite interested in compsci and don't enjoy physics :frown:

From my 5 minutes of expert Google research, you don't need to do physics.
I was told at one open day that the best combination for Computer Science involved as much maths as possible. I didn't need physics to get offers...
Math is a definate if you want to get into good unis that does not look at entry by the total amounts of UCAS points you have but the grade in each subject i.e. Oxbridge/Imperial/Bristol/Durham/UCL etc. Further math is really helpful if it is offered in schools. Places like Bristol gives AAA to those who do not do FMath but AAB to those who do FMath and there are other places that works pretty much the same way.

Oxbridge, Imperial alike definately asks for 3As
Bristol ask for AAA/AAB inc. Fmath this application cycle (for 08 entry)
Durham and UCL asks for ABB

You do not need to do physics, but as Imperial stated on their website, physics counted as a Highly recommended A-levels just after the must-have Math~

May I suggest you to pick a university that you want to go to and have a look on their website to see what kind of entry requirement they are looking for. If in doubt, you can also e-mail their admission tutor, as they are the one who knows what the criterias are.

Hey, I had an offer from Bristol for AAB and I don't do Further Maths. I was also offered deferred entry with ABB...
