As you’re measuring vertical oscillations, it allows you to consistently measure the displacement of the mass from the equilibrium position.

a fudicial marker is used to mark the original starting point of something, so you can measure the amount something has changed. In your case, the size of the vertical oscillations can be measured as you have a start point of which you can measure from
