Hey I just finish my foundation course for art and design, and I got offers from UAL and BU for an animation course. BA (Hons) Animation and BA (Hons) Computer Animation Art and Design to be exact. I’m struggling to choose which university to go to as both seems pretty good.

UAL has its reputation being well known, as it’s rank 2 in the world of Art and Design in 2020 QS World University Rankings. On the other hand, Bournemouth University’s animation course is ranked 4th in the top 25 animation schools and colleges in the world, 1st in the UK (Animation Career Review, 2020).

I’m currently really conflicted with this decision and I don’t know which university to choose, hoping you guys can give me some opinion or advice.
Thanks in advance !

Hi there!

I'm a second year Animation student at Plymouth College of Art Rankings aren't always accurate or truly reflective of what the course will be like, so I wouldn't necessarily base your decision off of those alone. Do you know which animation practice you may want to specialise in? Some universities are better for 3D, some for 2D, some for stop-motion. If you already know which area you'd like to specialise in, then I'd advise trying to work out which Uni is better suited to that area of animation. Open days are tricky right now because of Covid-19, however some Unis offer virtual tours. Perhaps check out what facilities both universities have and this can help you to understand which place better suits what you want to do in animation. Take a look at the stop-motion bays, the light tables, the graphics tablets, and the computers. Facilities aren't everything and the other half comes from the teaching quality. Maybe get in contact with the Unis and ask if you could talk to some of their current animation students (some may be Student Ambassadors) to really pick their brains about their experiences on the course. Lastly, I'd suggest taking a look at some of the student work being produced by the students and look at where their students have gone after graduation (LinkedIn can help you find this out).

I hope this helps!

Hi, I'm a current student at BU, although not on your course so I'm happy to answer any questions you have about BU or Bournemouth, the uni are also holding virtual open days, which you can attend and I believe they are also planning some campus tours in small groups! The other thing you could do is to speak with an ambassador for your course via UniBuddy. Any specific academic questions could also be emailed to the academic staff by clicking on their staff profiles at the bottom of the course page.

I love Bournemouth as a town and think it offers a great place to live for 3+ years for students. Definitely look at the difference in course structures and how each unit sits with your own interests and career aspirations. Also have a think about potential placement opportunities.

Let me know if you have any questions about Bournemouth :-)
