I’m looking for a first car that is quite cheap to run but looks nice/smart at the same time. Does anyone have any suggestions or ideas? 🙂

I have a 2013 VW Polo that I get on very well with. Reliable, smart, and has a bit more oomph than anything I drove for driving lessons (you know, the washing machine types!)

Well car with nice looks might not be reliable. Get the old trusty little Toyota Yaris or Honda Fit/City

Something under £1500 with a small engine that's in OK condition for the age and price.
Looks are extremely subjective.
