"Best of British" fancy dress for a girl?

Hey guys.

I'm helping out at the events in Freshers' Fortnight at uni next year, and the theme for one of the events is "Best of British". I really can't think of what to go as because there aren't that many options for girls! Someone else is going as Ginger Spice, but I'm not sure about the others.

The only options I have thought of so far are:
Jane Austen (I have a bonnet already! However, I can't find a cheap dress anywhere online and costume hire looks to be really expensive)
The Queen (but there's a fair chance someone else is already doing this and I still need to work out what I'd wear!)

Only the freshers' reps are in fancy dress so I think we're expected to make a fair amount of effort. Any ideas?

Geri Halliwell and wear the union jack dress

she's the worst of british but it's the flag that counts!

 I genuinely really like that idea!

Tut, tut. Geri has already been selected by someone else ...

How would I dress as Jade Goody? I guess I'd have to run around naked with my hands barely covering the essentials, screaming "MY KEBAB'S ON TV!" ... tempting ...

If you're handy with a sewing machine, there's patterns here for Austen-era dresses for a tenner: http://giftshop.janeausten.co.uk/acatalog/Patterns.html .

Might be too much effort though .

Ha, yeah, did consider that

I've never seen Mary Poppins so I'd feel like a fraud :frown:

Britannia is instantly recognisable, and if anyone needs clarification, just dig out a 50p.
I've made a costume for it before: bed sheet, painted bin lid, green paper leaves, sandals, trident. Easy as pie.

Any pics?

EDIT: If only I could get a Lion ...

EDIT 2: Did you get a helmet?

Go as a Lion-marked egg. They're British - you can beat them, you can batter them, but you can't better them!

You and a friend could go as Chris Hoy's thighs?

haha
