Why the magnitude of gravitational force between the stars and planets will affect doppler shift?

If I was marking this I'd struggle to give both marks for the highlighted answers, the gravitational force itself doesn't do anything to the light.
The system orbits about its centre of mass so if the centre of mass is further in the star then the star moves more slowly and the light is doppler shifted less.
