The Student Room Group

Advice needed please HELP!!!

Hi, so I really need advice on how to make friends in second year of uni. In first year I made several friends on my course but we're not that close - they recently met up without me so I'm not really in their 'group'. This didn't really bother me until a huge fall out happened with my friends from sixth form (over something that wasn't to do with me) - but basically it fragmented our entire group so now I only have a couple of close friends. I go to a uni in London and I'll be living in halls again for second year, which is partly to do with the covid-19 situation but also that I don't really have a group to flatshare with. Has anyone been in a similar position entering second year that could offer some advice?

I'm finding it hard to cope with seeing insta posts etc. of people meeting up now lockdown is beginning to ease and I really don't have people that I can call up and hang out with, which is stressing me out a lot. Thanks
Are you going into private accommodation or shared? if you're sharing a kitchen then itll be perfect to socialise. also join facebook groups of the accommodation you're staying at. Talk to people. Find your flatmates. Just be yourself most people dont find their close friends at uni until they reach their second year. So dont worry about not clicking with anyone just yet. Best of luck

Thank you for replying! Yes luckily my accommodation is flat-style so we share a kitchen and living area, it’s also uni accommodation and not private so I’m really hoping to meet some nice people! I feel like with coronavirus time was limited in first year to form really close friendships and its always taken me a little longer, maybe because I’m a little more reserved

Thank you 😊

Any time!
Honestly join a few societies!! They help so much and you meet a whole mix of people. I joined rowing this year and it's the best thing I did - I had never even done it before!!
Join societies based on the people if that makes sense, that way they'll be more on your wave length. e.g. a Philosophy group for open-minded people, a sport for competitive and active people etc. If you think this way it'll help you create a range and balance of friends you can enjoy different things with!!

Hope this helps

Thanks for replying . Honestly a lot of societies at my uni are very career orientated so that was a problem for me in first year. I wasn’t confident enough to join a sports society but I’m really into martial arts so I might join that society in second year
