Why does university snobbery exist?

I was going through several threads and noticed something: a lot of students were bashing other universities and courses. What do university students from the better universities get out of bashing students who study at the "lower ranked" universities, and/or may also be studying a subject not "traditional"?

Because most people on this forum are A-grade whores who wouldn't touch a university outside of the top 20 with a bargepole, because they assume that the only reason these unis exist is to cater for the need of the dense majority who got anything less than 5 As at A level. :indiff:

Most people who do that are are W*****S, it makes the feel better because they're above somebody (in reality they're not) ...get it quite a bit at my school.

To be honest, only people with who are very academically driven would post on these boards. I have only joined this forum as I have not got the grades that I wanted at AS level and are looking for advice. Most teenagers, be they clever or not, would never join a forum such as this. Only those very academic would be likely to.

Why do you care if it exists or not? Lets face it, it is bound to. People have certain affiliations to their alumni and are bound to judge other peoples, and hence snobbery comes about. Its just like football teams, people debate whose best/crap in every pub in the country and unis are no different, its just harmless banter about whats best cos no one really knows and you shiuldnt let it bother you as its just harmless fun. If you think its bad here then go to America where its ten times worse, full of banter about 'state' unis and the better ones
