Hey everyone, I have accepted an offer to University of Bath for Computer Science with placement. I am from Poland and high school education here differs slightly from UK’s requirements. I would like to know what level of Calculus is expected from CompSci student, because frankly, calculus is the thing I am most unsure of and I would like to have the possibility to work on it before arriving on Campus

comp sci is quite mathematic, (more on the logic side, binary and other number bases, hex, (octal?) & abstract Von Neumann stuff), but typically , as the Swiss EPFL comp sci professor told me "British mathematics is useless, our French Math is much more serious"

Revise everything that you can, to be prepared, but remember that for reverse-engineering cryptography, it was Polish scientists who showed the British modern-hero Alan Turing which way to go

No need to worry at all about the calculus or the maths on the course, I promise! If you have done any calculus at all that is enough and you shouldn't struggle. If there are parts of the maths modules that you find more difficult with there is a specific MASH (Maths and Statistics Help) drop in group for the first year computer science students. I did first year in Computer Science and Mathematics at Bath and used almost no calculus. If you want to work on something focus on contextualising your maths so you know not just how to work something out but what the applications are, what it means and how a question might need a calculation. This will be useful for the proof work because words and understanding are mostly more important than your calculations when you form a proof.
