MSC Dissertation, how long did it take you?

So basically I received my dissertation proposal back 2 weeks ago for a 13,000 word dissertation that involves conducting surveys etc.

I have just started the dissertation today which leaves me with only 9 weeks to complete the project from start to finish. In hindsight I should have started 2 weeks ago but hey ho.

Just wanted to know other peoples experiences. I am currently furloughed from a 16 hour job so I can work on it as much as I like.

How long did it take you guys?

I had a 15,000 dissertation last year for my degree course and I think it took me about 6 weeks to do and send back , but I used a notepad first to do it and then finally typed it all up and do my placements and university studying coursework at same time as doing this. Hard going but got it done.

You got 9 weeks to do it so don't rush things as make sure you get it right ok
And good luck with it too x

Given its the summer if you dont have any uni modules thats plenty of time. You just need to make sure your making progress every day.

What you now more limited on is supervisor feedback, which can be key in making small adjustments to the project and the report to maximise your potential. I would make sure you are making lists of questions before every meeting and pushing yourself to get some writing done as soon as possible to try and get some feedback on it.

It's hard to say tbh. I had to do a 20,000 word research project, and I did it over 5 months. The writing up probably took half of that.

How much have you done so far, like reading/data collecting etc.?

It's a taught masters so it's not a research based degree, we got our dissertation proposal marks back about 2.5 weeks ago now so I had to do a fair bit of legwork to complete that. I wish we got 5 months to do it in the maximum I could have had if I started 2.5 weeks ago was bang on 3 months.

Mine was a taught MA, but tbf my degree had a lot of research elements. We got 5 months as our dissertation was double the length of other subjects'.

Have you got ethical approval and all that sorted?

I did an MA one in about 60 hours (writing)

I'd already done all the reading previously, so that was easy enough

Haha i've posted a similar question to this...i've got 6 weeks [9 September] to do mine. I've done an essay generally on the same topic at end of semester 2 but i'll need to brush up on my knowledge and go back over my reading. I managed to get my intro done in one day and started my lit review today; work twice a week like yourself although i'm not furloughed. Have you planned out what you are going to work on when and how much time you're going to spend on it etc? I haven't got a good supervisor really so I will send the work over as I do it, but not expecting much back.
