In the US they call them colleges, so since three of those "universities" would call themselves colleges, I guess either wording is acceptable

What is this "Math" you speak of? :p:

In all seriousness, I've actually wondered about this before as well. Harvard seems to be ranked highly but I swear that's more about business than anything else. I've read about Princeton (Einstein used to go there for peace + Andrew Wiles (who solved Fermat's last theorem) teaches there + I think RSA encryption comes from around there) being quite good for Maths. Obviously, Cambridge is quite distinguished as well.

actulaly me too, i've heard that princeton and MIT are more 'maths-y' than harvard....

Einstein was never at Princeton University; he was, however, at the Institute for Advanced Study in Princeton. The inventors of RSA were at MIT. Andrew Wiles is indeed a professor at Princeton, but he was from Oxford (undergraduate) and Cambridge (Ph.D.).

For reasearch: Harvard or MIT.

For undergraduate study: Probably some small but wealthy liberal arts college few of us have ever heard of.
