At the moment I can't afford the gym so am doing things at home to get stronger. My aim is to get a faster time in running, I've got good fitness but I feel in order to get faster (without strength training) I would have to go out there and give ridiculously tough training sessions.

So I am wanting to get stronger but don't want to put on too much muscle. Is running up and down stairs beneficial? I try to do 20 minutes of it a day.

It rather trains your endurance instead of strength.

What does 'too much muscle' mean? Wouldn't having the maximum amount of muscle mass as a sprinter be most beneficial?

What's stopping you going out for a run? Try a 'couch to 5k'. When I started running I did endurance first, building up to an hour, then started upping the mileage, and I did get faster. Over what distance are you wanting to improve?
