And please don't just say 'tuck it in' because I do that, but somehow it's never dry?

Not sure what you mean, your body is 60% water, you keep the tampon in a damp place for hours, why do you expect the string to stay dry?

I don’t think you can keep it dry (especially in ‘that’ area!).
Wash you hands thoroughly before and after
