Meet-up: Freshers Week 08

Current Plan:

Day: Wednesday
Location: Whey Pat
Time:I'll be outside from 7.30-7.40ish, and then we'll head inside.
Optional beach trip later in the evening. Weather dependent.

Problem Solving

Q: Where's the Whey Pat?
A: Put 'whey pat st andrews' into Google maps. It's by the roundabout at the big stone arch at the west end of South Street, and it's next to a petrol station. Anyone who's been in the town for a while will probably be able to give you directions.

Q: What if I still can't find it?
A: PM me in advance and I'll give you my phone number, so you can keep in touch.

Q: How'll I recognize everyone?
A: We'll be standing outside to start with. I'm still working on making us an easy-to-recognize group.

Q: Can I bring other people?
A: Yup. Preferably don't bring 20 wasted randomers, though. That might be weird.

Q: Will everyone be drinking? Do I have to join in?
A: I'd like us to support the Whey Pat and buy something each, if possible. You can buy whatever you want - I'll probably be orange-and-lemonading my way into the night. It shouldn't be expensive at all.

So. We're going to have a St Andrews TSR meet-up in Freshers week, woo!

We need to think about where and when we'll meet, and what we'll do when we get there. If we want to do something outside, we should have a backup indoors plan, and some way of communicating what's happening. We'll also want some way of recognising who the TSR people are.

For reference, last year, we went to the Whey Pat one evening, while wearing hats for fun, although we disguised this as being 'for recognition purposes', so that more people would do it

Feel free to make suggestions for what we do, and any preferences you have in general. I'll post the final plans here [i.e. edit this post] once we've decided.

Ooh, I'm also thinking of doing name-badges this time, if people don't find that totally mortifying. It depends how many people turn up, but it can get confusing.

EDIT: You're all welcome to come along, even if you don't post much on here, or if you just live in St Andrews, or whatever. And feel free to bring a friend or two along.

Also, since we'll probably be taking up quite a bit of space, I'd like to suggest everyone buys a drink or two, to support the Whey Pat. Don't worry... you can drink whatever you like. I won't force beer and whiskey down your throats :p:

Count me in! Name badges? I think you should make everyone a giant sign to carry around instead.

Pub? Pub golf? Beach? Beach and cocktails?

I'll definately be around for at least some of this. Have to scout for academic kids. :p:

Whey Pat sounds good to me, they have the room at the back which is quite a good size.
I'm going to have a tshirt with my name on it (hopefully!), and if I don't, I'm totally going to bring my name badge from work

I want to go to the beach, but with the weather as it is that might not happen :frown: Pub, then beach if it's nice?
I might grace you with my presence.

just socialise with the people who are there instead of trying to avoid socialising with strangers by trying to meet up with people you 'know' off the net

its a lot more fun i tells ya

Count me in.

Do Freshers need to actively find parents or do parents just choose us?
ohhh yarrr.
the more the merrier
...or in this case 'if i meet anyone it's a miracle'
=P

Heh, I agree totally overall. However, we've had meet-ups in the past, and it's nice to get to meet the people off here. I'd be worried if anyone built their entire life's socailising using TSR, but people seem keen on a meet-up, and it should be good fun.

la_banane_verte, I think your plan is a sensible one. My only suggestion would be choosing somewhere nearer the beach, so that there's less walking needed between the two, and it's easier for latecomers to find us. However, I do like the Whey Pat and would be happy to go there. I'm always happy to go there...
MarshallM, we could adapt this to involve cocktails as desired. I think pub golf might make it hard for people to find us, though. Not sure.

No Future, traditionally, you ask your academic mum, and your academic dad asks you. It's nice to find yourself some academic parents, but you don't need to do it immediately. And you don't have to abide by tradition.
Yayyy, I'm totally up for this  Beach sounds like a nice idea, although I'm not sure how cold it would be :p:

Any preferences for when we meet?
I think I'm busy at some point on Tues/Weds/Thurs, but I'm not totally certain when.
Ofc Im in!

And fyi... Its nice meeting up with people from TSR - I still see ninja and steeeeevo about during the year and its like... "hey! I know you!" xD

We should have a bbq on the beach. back up plan being the whey pat for nachos

Middle of the week is pretty good, people kinda know there way around town and such by then (and if now a map is provided )
I'm in!

Count me in though I seem to be cursed when it comes to these meetings. Can we make it as late in the week as possible as I don't arrive back until the Tuesday. Not fussed what we do - pub and beach are always good fun!

Count me in. We should do something mid-week like wednesday. On the first weekend, we'll probably be going out with flat-mates, our hall floor mates, etc. On the second weekend, we'll probably go out with the group(s) we've gotten ourselves into.

The middle of the week fits conveniently inbetween, hehe. I am thinking a beach meet-up. I'll bring Scotch.

I was actually thinking about butchering a t-shirt with Name, Subject, blah all that crap. I will be sick of repeating myself and just point instead
I'm down for a meet-up, I won't be there until the 22nd at night though.
