I am wanting to study japanese at uni, but my work experience was cancelled due to corona. I don’t know any Japanese, but was wondering what books I could read that would help me and would look good on my application?

When I was doing A Levels and then going to University to study languages, I used to buy a lot of my books at Grant and Cutler, which was an Aladdin's cave for linguists. They moved to Foyles, but still have an extensive range of language materials. You might well see something in the Japanese section which is a good fit, but you can always ring them for a recommendation if that would help.

Feel free to have a look at my post on the following thread for some exceptional Japanese language resources:

As an aside, this book was really interesting to read before university: https://www.amazon.co.uk/Introductio.../dp/0521705193

The newest edition looks very pricey, so I might just stick with an older and cheaper edition. :rambo:

Hey! I'm gonna be studying Japanese at uni this year. Which universities are you looking to apply to?I didn't have any work experience on my personal statement and it wasn't a problem, I also didn't study Japanese previously. I definitely think reading as much as you can into aspects you're interested in (e.g. literature, history, society, linguistics, or whatever else) will help a lot in your application. If you have any topic areas you like feel free to ask more about them as I might know some books

i also applied to durham and sheffield my firm and insurance unis are oxford and edinburgh tho... fingers crossed for results day!

a brief but concise book for beginners on modern japanese history is 'modern japan: a very short introduction' which mainly focuses on the 19th century onwards. a longer and more challenging book which i still enjoyed is andrew gordon's 'a modern history of japan'

i haven't read too much on earlier japanese history, but a book on one of the college reading lists which seems very good is 'Japan before perry: a short history' by conrad totman.

you could probably find free pdfs of these by searching online!

I see that you have mentioned Birkbeck as one of the Universities you are going to apply to. I would think carefully about this and consider replacing this with another University.

I'm a Post-Graduate at Birkbeck - teaching at Birkbeck is done in the evenings and occasionally at weekends; it's done in this way to make it a good option for people who are working during the day. It would be a very different experience to being a 'normal' student who is at University during the day.

Japanese at SOAS which is actually next door to Birkbeck would be a much better option for you.

Thanks for telling me I had no clue! Unfortunately SOAS requires me to have done a foreign language at gcse which I did not, so perhaps I will replace birbeck with uclan
