Sorry to go against the flow, but I think queen alice has a point. The original post may not have been racist, but (to me at least ) the implication that racial background impacts on the ability to mix socially was there. I know I'm probably being hopelessly idealistic, but why does race/background have to be a factor? People are people, if you get on with them then good, and if not the that's fair enough to. Why does anything else need to be a consideration?

Racial background doesn't have to impact on the ability to mix socially - the OP never once mentioned the "social" side of the population diversity, she(or he? forgot what the Op was :p: ) didn't say that she wanted to know about the population of the black people to find out whether there will be enough people she can interact with, or mix with.
So, I'm not entirely sure how you got to the idea that the OP requires this information in order to make a judgement whether she can "mix" with the rest of Bristol, but you yourself have assumed that this is the reason for her enquiry.

No because skin colour does not matter to me
I would care about how many people liked the same music as me, how many people liked swimming etc... but no one should care just because someone has more or less skin pigmentation - seriously!!!??! what the hell?!?!

caring & wanting to know are different things.
*sigh

Ethnic Diversity in Bri... 31-08-2008 17:33 She is ENGLISH, with black skin. Hardly a different culture! So its not if I went to an Indian school, it would be like if I went to an English school full of black people - which would make no difference to me as they speak English, and were brought up in England...

maybe so.
But she's asking about the statistics of a whole city.
How about if you were sent to a city in England, as big as Bristol with a black population of over 85%??
Wouldn't you be even a little curious to know how many white people there are?

For the record, I didn't neg you, A) I always leave my name and B) I don't neg people just because they have different opinions to mine.

Of course they aren't, the statistics are there for researchers to use in their studies
I had to use such statistics for my Geography module on social exclusion.

And racism is actually valuing a race above others, which is what your question implied. It is not "putting into action" anything...

Your argument is flawed. You asked about how many black people, because obviously you want there to be lots of black people. And the fact you are British means the only cultural similarity will be you can share hair tips, which for me does not sound like a good enough reason to ask.
(What I mean is, you will go to Bristol anyway because it is a good uni, but you would still prefer there to be more black students - don't deny it).

Here we go making assumptions again. I asked a simple question regarding ethnic minorites and suddenly I'm a racist who "obviously wants there to be lots of black people." The reason I asked how many black people there are is because of a simple reason of correlation; if there is a significant number, I can can be sure I can have my hair catered for. As I said before, don't demean what might be relevant to others but not for you. My hair type is vastly different from the majority of the population and I need experienced hairdressers who WILL happen (surprise, surprise) to be the same ethnicity as me; don't attempt to demean it as "sharing hair tips."
The logic goes: e.g there are a significant number of black people so AS A RESULT there will be enough hairdressers as there will be a viable business so there will be people to do my hair.
It does NOT go 'there are a significant number of black people so I'll go to Bristol because I obviously value black people more.'

If there are hardly any people of the same ethnicity be there will be NO suitable hairdressers. See the connection? Bristol may be a massive city but it IS still almost solely white British dominated so you may be shocked but I'm NOT "bound" to find this people. There are a large number of places in the country that do not cater to my hair type. As someone in the majority, these are things you understandably aren't concerned about but please do not talk about things you know nothing about.

As I've said numerous times before, this issue is not big enough to bypass a good uni but I need to know beforehand so I can make arrangements.

I guessed it would've been you because it removed a fair few points :p:

There is nothing wrong in saying that one may feel out of place in a situation that is different. If I took you to a univeristy in Nigeria and told you you were to stay there for 4 years and there were barely any British people there, are you telling me that not even for a moment, you wouldn't feel out of place?

Apologies for the list of separate posts, I seemed to have missed half the thread! Anyway: The above comparison doesn't really apply, as (unless you've stated otherwise, and I've missed that too in which apologise) you are British. Going to Nigeria would be quite different; one would have to adjust to a completely new culture, rather than the one you've grown up surrounded by.

I've already given my reasons in previous posts - you may need to reread. I only asked because the number of black people in the uni/city will determine if there will be people to cater for my hair type. These people happen to be black so it makes sense I ask how many black people there are in the uni/city. I'm black and if the hairdressers were purple I would still ask how purple people are there in the uni/city. It's nothing to do with I only plan to socialise with black people. Its ironic that you and Queen Alice think this equates to racism when you are the ones doing the prejudging.

As we've now clarified that this is a query related specifically to haircare, maybe it's time we stopped the whole wider debate that we're semi waging. According to wikipedia (fountain of knowledge that it is) 2.8% of 440,000 Bristolians are black/black British. Even by my dodgy maths that's what? Well over 12,000 people. Odds are someone's got to be doing their hair so, hopefully OP, you should be fine!

I know I just said we should let this be, and I will, but I do just want to defend myself slightly: I specifically said I wasn't accusing you or racism, but your initial post didn't make it clear you were only worried about the issue because of your hair, and there was a lot of talk about 'feeling out of place' which I felt was unjustified, cause I take the view one person is much like another regardless of race.

Sorry I don't believe you.
Its simple really: why didn't you just ask "are there any hair salons in Bristol that cater for black people's hair?" if that was your reason?

Because the hair salon issue wasn't the only reason. As I said in my original post, places with more ethnic minorities tend to be more accepting, and as I also said in my original post, I was just curious to know. Also if there are hardly any black people anyway in Bristol, there will be even fewer (if any) on this board and even fewer black girls (if any) who could answer this. However anybody in Bristol, especially given this is a specific Bristol sub forum can give a rough estimate of the number of black people or ethnic minorities enabling me to draw my own conclusion.
There aren't really black people in Bristol. Not when I went anyway. There was one black girl actually but thats it. I'd advise you to go to a University neat Tottenham as there are **** loads of afro thingy whatever they are called hair dressers on Tottenham High Road

Not true really. Bristol is 2.8% black, the UK is 2%. It has an above average number of black people. All in all it has a higher proportion of people from ethnic minorities (or mixed race) than the national average, but not vastly higher.

Good old Wikipedia. :p:

It's about 55:45 (females:males) but after the first year it balances out as vet med students start spending more/all of their time at Langford.
