Synaesthesia

I associate days of the week with colours (monday = red, tuesday = orange, thursday= purple etc) so the colours come into my head when I think of the days, but I'm not sure that's enough to really count as synaesthesia. I find it so interesting though!

I do that too and my monday is red! I have colours for the alphabet and numbers and my friend's names as well, my friend Lizzy for example is orange and oddly always conjures up an image of a lava lamp :s-smilie:. I honestly thought everyone did this but alas amongst family and friends I am alone *cue dramatic sigh* it's nice to feel special though having a 'condition' with a fancy difficult to spell name. I wish I had the taste one though or colours for music I'd love that!

When I hear music that I really like I see shapes and images in my "mind's eye" but I doubt I have synaesthesia.

Reply 23

I've heard of something like this ages ago but I thought back then that person was just making it up.
Must be cool associating sounds, shapes etc with colours. Seeing things in a different light surely oughta be alot more interesting.

hey I think I have it because in my mind words have a colour and if u asked me to go through the alphabet then i would say the same colour for the same letter no matter how many times you ask me. Also I'm lead to believe that seeing number lines, days of the week and months of the year in spatial form is another part of it (correct me if I'm wrong) and if so I have that too and couldn't live without it if I'm truthful

Ok just looked it up and the spatial thing is definitely syneasthesia. WOW so weird up until like a year ago I thought everyone thought like this with years, months, numbers and letters and I asked one of my friends what shape her week was and she looked at me like I was a weirdo, so then i explained and she was like nope I don't do that and neither did any of my other friends. The spatial thing is great though- really helps me in maths! and I never forget an appointment

Grapheme, Numeric and Aural -> Colour
Aural is particularly useful for music. C major is bright pink, F sharp major Forest green etc. Perhaps one of the most renowned aural colour synaesthete was Olivier Messiaen - a genius in every sense of the word. Not attributed to his synaesthesia of course, it just adds to his impression.

This is how I discovered I was a synaesthete too. I asked my mum if she saw days of the weeks as colours, or visualised time spatially (weeks are in ovals for me, and days coloured accordingly [monday - ocean blue etc]) or even imagines peoples names with colours. She looked at me as if I had grown another head - in TOK class one day our teacher discussed synaesthesia, and it felt so revelationary.

Yeah, I have grapheme -> colour synaesthesia and I think the thing on ThinkGeek is awesome! Unfortunately my A is not red though :frown: It's bright yellow

Has anyone ever checked the last.fm group for synaesthetes? A lot of people have joined thinking that they 'see' music because they can use their imaginations. Uh... :p:

I had no idea. I was listening to Oraison last night. It'd be amazing to see what he sees.

I know what you mean! I've tried asking my friends before what shapes their weeks/years/months were and what colours they were... They looked at me quite strangely and thought I was making it up :s-smilie:

How weird and difficult would it be to organise your day and plan ahead anything if you couldn't see it in spatial form!

Reply 32

grapheme ftw! I just walk along singing random notes and getting funny looks from people hehe

Reply 33

I believe everyone has it to some extent.

I've yet to meet someone who doesn't use some sort of association in their minds eye for other things. Be it numbers, words, etc.

I know people who see numbers as male/female. Good/evil. Some have personalities for them, some have colours for them, some have objects for them. I don't know anybody who doesn't have this effect to some degree.

Reply 34

I don't have anything for numbers. They're just numbers. You haven't met me though. :p:

Maths is my weakest subject.

What about if you can taste what you smell? Does that count or does it have to be related to colour?

Also, sometimes when I'm watching something on TV, it feels as if i can literally smell whats on the TV. Is this Synaesthesia?

No. That's the same for almost everyone in the world. :p:

That's more like it. It has to be consistent though.

I remember that word in English literature GCSE

(people I don't like are purple, friendly people orange, people on the fringe blue, science is blue, R.S is orange or yellow, English is yellow or red, Maths is purple)

I'm guessing you don't like Maths..

Whenever I see the number 9 I feel that I "know" it, like a friend. It's weird.

I get this - mostly with smells and tastes, which is pretty bog standard I guess, but also things like a certain smell evoking a certain song and vice versa. The connections we have in our brains fascinate me!
