Synaesthesia

i read about this the other week and i felt complete.
i have forced myself not to think like this though, hoping that i'd be more efficient if i thought "normally" but i still can't help visualising everything, like months of the year laid out in a map.
also, when it's really dark i can see sounds.
these aren't my only examples. and i have a lot of colour associations too. (i tried to tap back into it a few months ago for revision notes, but unfortunately for one topic almost everything ended up purple...)
up until last year-ish i had an amazing memory too but it just doesn't seem as powerful any more...

I "see" smells. I don't know if this counts, but nearly everything I smell triggers a memory of a person/place/moment. It's really weird because I must take in loads more smells subconsciously than anything else, like sound or sight.

the sense of smell is very closely linked to memory.

also, odd numbers make me very uncomfortable, but i think that's just something else.

My boyfriend caught me waving my finger in the air pointing to the days of the week in my 'mind's eye' and was like.. have you taken your special pills today..? and I couldn't understand how anyone could know what day it was without 'looking'.. same with the alphabet. I've always 'pictured' things.. words too.. it's the only way I can spell etc.

I picture words, its the only way I spell but I am very good at spelling, I guess this is why. I also wave my hands at days in my head trying to organise them like its a touch screen or something. My days are squares in a row, months are rectangles, i dont really use weeks or years lol.

I'm fascinated by this! I've never heard about it before actually, and unfortunatly, it doesn't seem to strike a chord with me, its just something completely new to me! How did people come to realise they had it?

I like reading/hearing about people with Synaesthesia. There was one particularly amazing Pipe Organ composer (his name escapes me) who could "see" musical notes.

He used his compositions to "paint pictures" for himself - and they are AMAZING!

Whenever I see the number 9 I feel that I "know" it, like a friend. It's weird.

I get that too! though that's because I think '9' looks like a person. :s-smilie:

Yes, synaesthesite here :wavey:. I'm audio-colour crossover. Any musical sound I see as colour. This includes voices and musical notes, but not toneless noises like bangs and scrapes, etc. (just general noise).

I've always in my mind arranged the people I know by the colour of their voice. I only found out about synaesthesia about five years ago, I grew up thinking this was perfectly normal :p:.

I don't know really. I always think of wednesday as red but that's about it. Wish I had it actually. it helps rather than hinders

Reply 68

I don't think I am, because I only have it for certain letters, so I reckon it must just be association of something.. but
2, D = red
3, F - green
7, L = yellow
5, P = Blue

there are probably more, but those are the ones I notice. Especially 2d, 3f.

aren't there some autistic people who do this with numbers and they can work out crazy calculator sums to like 9 decimal places, and they're like geniuses.

Do you mean like when you are talking or listening to someone, you see the words in your mind? If you do, I have that! When I hear a new word, I can normally work out what it is spelt like, but when I can't work it out, I get really frustrated and have to immediately check the dictionary. Yes, I know, very geeky.

This thread is amazing! Every time I read some new posts, I'm sitting there thinking "Oh God, I do that!"

lol a Dulux colour chart of friends? That's probably the best thing I've read on here!

btw I'm not taking the piss, I honestly think that it's mint. And anyway, if you just look through this thread, I've posted about 5 times with all my freaky synaethesias!

How weird and difficult would it be to organise your day and plan ahead anything if you couldn't see it in spatial form!

Do you mean to say that most people don't see some sort of timetable in their mind? God, that would be impossible!

I know!!! I wouldn't cope not being able to see it all laid out in my mind...

kind of, but mine is only the main words so not words like at, it, the, just the main ones appear in my head...i dont know how but i manage to work out how new words are spelt most of the time. It's very odd!

I've always thought of the days of the week as odd and even-
Monday, Wednesday, Friday and Sundays are odd days
Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays are even.
Whenever I've tried to explain this to someone they think I'm mad. I know this doesn't count as syn, and I don't think I've got any other symptoms, so I'm happy enough with my (slight) weirdness :p:

You are wrong.

Anyone keeping count of how many times I've posted in this thread will realise that I am also odd.:p:

Haha, pretty weird, isn't it :p:? It's very specific shades too, and people always want to know what colour they are if I mention it, so I'll spend the rest of the day looking around at everything so that I can go "Oh, there you are! Look, that orange right there, that's you :yep:!"
