Synaesthesia

I doubt this is at all the same thing, but negative numbers make me feel slightly sick and disappointed and there are certain numbers which really appeal to me - 8 is quite sexy, 7 is smart, 4 is crafty, 1 is stupid, 2 is blank and so on and so forth...

i think that definitely sounds 'synaesthesia like' :p:, 8's are sexy? lol sorry it just sounded funny

i posted in this thread earlier about my spatial stuff (numberlines, the week, month, years etc) but when i listen to music i kind of make something similar like a specific pattern for the beat :p: sounds odd not sure if i can explain it correctly but its like it looks different depending on the rhythm and beat and i think this is why i prefer certain kind of music over others because if the 'pattern' is too messy or "all over the place" i get frustrated and can't enjoy the music  for some reason rock and metal makes a 'messy' pattern kind of overlaps itself and i hate it :p: i prefer smoothly flowing music.. might be that i'm over analyzing here but its just something i've been thinking about lately

Actually yes it is a form of synaesthesia - a generally more unknown branch called 'Ordinal Linguistic Personality', in which numbers or letters are associated with personalities or particular characteristics. So uh, welcome to the club

synaesthesia is like my biggest dream come true, i wish i had it.

I don't have it, but I remember having this disagreement in English class because I was the only one who didn't assign a colour to the days of the week.

Reply 125

Ahh I have this. I do the personification one, OLP, where certain numbers have personalities. Also, sounds induce visions of certain colours and shapes.

I have the grapheme colour one... I thought everyone did until I was talking to my mum about it and she was just like 'what are you on about you weirdo?' Haha. It's very handy for remembering spellings and phone numbers, and I tend to remember which number bus I need to get by the pattern the colours make rather than the actual number itself, if that makes sense.

Can anyone here "taste" music?

Reply 128

I cant taste music but I do have synesthesia. I mainly visualise music as colours and its very apparent when writing songs as to which colour a song is, I write for both of my bands btw. Things have to be the correct colour otherwise it really messes me up. Its not even to do with the same scale or tempo, because one riff can be a totally different colour to another riff in the same song.

I also see words and letters as colours but not so much as music, that only became apparent after my mate brought it to my attention about the music thing. He told me the guy behind Aphex Twin has it too and said it sounded exactly like what I described, I wasnt even aware my thought processes were different or the "condition" existed.

I don't have synaesthesia, but I associate D major as being a yellow-gold colour and A major being a rosy colour. Also, minors are darker than majors. However, I don't 'see' these colours when I hear the music.

Days of the week. All different colours. Mostly obviously wednesday as red, saturday as white and sunday as yellow though. Not like I see colours. I just get the feeling that's the colour they are, you know. Is it the same for others with colours?

I see weeks and years as a map in my mind. Weeks are in a loop with mon-fri on the botton and saturday and sunday on the top. To me it looks like this:-

Sunday-----------------------Saturday
Monday - Tuesday - Wednesday - Thursday - Friday

Not sure if this is the same thing because I don't see colours.

The year I see is also a loop, slightly skewed, with more months on the left than the right. I have always seen the year, ever since I can remember - I said this to my sister once and she just laughed and said she didn't believe me.

Does this count as synaesthesia?

Somebody's been watching Heroes

I see the days of the week, months of the year and other "timescales" in my mind's eye as linear, but broad - that's always how I think of them. Seasons too - it's hard to describe, it's sort of like a 3D line and depending on what month, day of the week it is etc, I view it in my mind's eye from a different perspective. It's entirely instinctive, I don't have to spend time thinking about it - it's a natural disposition.

I don't know if this is Synaesthesia, though? I can also associate days of the week to colour, but that takes a bit more conscious thought...

Would these be regarded as synaesthetic?
