Was wondering whether anyone had any experience writing letters to editors?

Yes if you're medical student, it's most common to write a letter in one of the medical education journals. Ensure that the journal is pubmed indexed so you have the points for applications, then look through the journal for any research articles that might interest you (or that you think you can write a response to). Make sure that the journal is free to publish in unless you're happy paying (e.g. £2k in some journals). Outside of that, they're pretty easy to write, just look through recently published examples in the same journal.
