SQA Appeals: SQA Results Day 2020

UPDATE (11th August): If your result was downgraded from your teacher estimate, you will be given your teacher estimated grade. If your result was upgraded from your teacher estimate, you will keep the grade you were awarded on 4th August.
An appeals process for candidates who feel their teacher estimated grade is lower than what they believe they should have been awarded is to follow.

SQA Appeals FAQ - Results Day 2020

The results are in! We hope that everyone gets the results that they were hoping for, but if not, this thread is for you. In the absence of exams this year, the SQA have created an appeals service, also known as the SQA Post Certification Review, should anyone need to use any of these services come results day.

If you want to have a general chat about results day, or need some advice about the results you have received, check out the SQA Results Discussion thread. You can also have a look at the SQA section of TSR's results day hub for lots of useful information. :h:

If you have a question regarding the appeals, please feel free to post in this thread.

All the best with results!

Who is eligible?
Anyone whose achieved grade was lower than the grade they were estimated by their centre (i.e. school/college). [NB: Your estimated grade is not the same as your predicted grade, which you may have discussed with your teachers throughout the year - the estimated one is the one the school gave the SQA].

Can I submit for an appeal myself?
No, only your school/college can do this. You can ask them to however, and it comes at no cost to them, so I wouldn't expect them to deny (eligible) candidates the chance to appeal.

Priority Review, or a Review?
Priority reviews are for people who had conditional university or college offers. Everyone else will get a review. The only difference between these are how long they take to process - it just means that those waiting to know whether they will have their university/college place will find out sooner

Key Dates (Priority Review)
Deadline for submission of Priority Review requests: 14th August
Evidence is uplifted by SQA from schools: 20th August
Centres/UCAS/unis receive outcome: 4th September

Key Dates (Review)
Deadline for submission of Review requests: 21st August
Evidence is uplifted by SQA from schools: 27th August
Centres/UCAS/unis receive outcome: TBC (depending on numbers of submissions)

What happens when I submit an appeal?
Your school/college will need to provide evidence that supports the estimate that they made. This could include prelims, class tests classwork, coursework (complete or incomplete), or performance evidence (e.g. music, drama, etc.). Some of this evidence is more substantial than others (e.g. classwork alone is unlikely to be enough), so a range of evidence is good. Additionally, teachers can provide a short description of your capabilities, in what's called a candidate commentary.
The evidence is then reviewed holistically by a senior subject-specialist SQA examiner, who makes a decision.

How will my grades change?
When you submit an appeal, your grade could go up, stay the same, or (in rare cases) go down. That last option is unlikely, and even in the post results services used in normal years is a possibility that happens very very rarely.

I missed the conditions of my university/college offer - can I still submit an appeal?
Yes, if you missed the conditions of your University/College, your school/centre can submit for a Priority Review. These must be submitted by centres by 14th August 2020, and centres and UCAS will be advised on the outcome of this by 4th September 2020. If your grades are increased and it turns out you meet the conditions of your offer, most Universities/Colleges will still offer you your place as long as you let them know by the end of August.

If you do submit a priority marking review, you should let your university/college know as soon as possible on/after results day!

So what if my grade changes as a result of the appeal?
Then you will be issued with a new, updated Scottish Qualifications Certificate and the SQA will change your grade in their system. This will take a few months.

For full information, including answers to more questions and key dates, you can check the full SQA appeals page here.

I think you probably need to discuss this with your school. They can hopefully confirm your grade or query what has happened with the exam board!

Get in contact with your school - they should also have a copy of your results. Alternatively, the SQA's Candidate Advice Line is open and can be reached on 0345 279 1000. It runs from 8am 6pm on Tuesday 4 August, and from 8.30am 5pm Wednesday 5, Thursday 6, and Friday 7 August.

Hope this helps and you get some clarity soon

If it's not mentioned anywhere, it sounds like something could have been mixed up somewhere along the line - definitely ask about both and let us know how you get on

Seems like there has been some kind of real mix up then! Definitely talk to your school ASAP, and SQA too.

Do you have uni offers depending on this?

Sorry to hear your results weren't as you hoped/expected. Definitely speak to your school about whether you're eligible for appeals

That's probably good, but definitely speak to your school/SQA so you can find out what's happened with your results!

Glad to hear - hope the appeal goes well for you!
Got AAB but was predicted AAA as the SQA dropped me down 2 refined bands so I’m appealing. If we are in 6th year and got our place at uni do we appeal under regular or priority reviews?

That's still a really good set of results, and congratulations on getting your place! You'd therefore be in the regular reviews, as priority is only for candidates with conditional offers
I missed my conditions for an English uni but they haven't rejected me yet. They say that they will make a final decision after they receive the A level results. Will waiting for so long jeopardise my insurance choice- Edinburgh? Will it still be there waiting for me when I'm rejected in around 2 weeks time? I tried to contact Edinburgh but their email auto reply says I can be waiting up to 10 days for them to reply to my enquiry. Track hasn't updated- it still shows my firm and insurance. I'm stuck in limbo and worried I'll lose my insurance choice.

You insurance offer should stay if you've met the grades for it.

Would you be able to name the uni of your firm choice? (You can PM it to me if you'd prefer.) It really annoys me when institutions do this because it's really unfair on students. :frown:

It's Cambridge so I suppose they can justify the delay.
Thanks very much for your reply, that's very reassuring. Guess I'll just need to wait it out 😥
