Law Or History Degree?

Hi all Im new to TSR, but I hope some of you can answer my two burning dilemmas.

FUTURE AIM:
I wish to end up with a well paid job in management|business.

Dilemma 1: HISTORY OR LAW DEGREE?

I have thought of two possible routes:

ROUTE 1: History Degree (hopefully at Cambridge) >> joining a large multi-national company for a few years >> going on to study an MBA >> rejoining business in a management role.

ROUTE 2: Same as route 1 except with a law degree (LLB) from a top university however I understand my chances of Cambridge are reduced with law than with history.

My biggest concern with history is it is not vocational towards a business career wheras an LLB in law would be very benefitial for such a route. Perhaps I would be disadvantaged with a History degree?

Dilemma 2: COULD I MAKE CAMBRIDGE FOR LAW|HISTORY?

This is a major misconception. You really really really can't plan your future career out like this, it really doesn't work like that. I don't have any idea what you mean by "I wish to end up with a well paid job in management|business", and I doubt you do either. A career in 'management/business' is such a vague career goal as to not really be important, you should take things as they come when you look for a job following uni.

Law is not needed for a business career, of course it is not. You should take what you are most interested in, and what you think you will do well at: a first in History would stand you in better stead than a worse mark in law, take the course that you want to do and consequently choose a subject that you will be able to work well in. Neither of these degrees are vocational.

As for unis, you could apply to Cambridge, but it would be a long-shot as your UMS are relatively weak when compared to Cambridge standards. To get in you would need to be very impressive in other areas, though if you want to put the effort in and really go for it then it is worth a shot. UCL would be a good choice. There are a number of other excellent unis that you can apply to.

do what you enjoy. do well in your degree and think about your career afterwards.
Do a law degree. It's blatently better, all the cool people like me do them =)

More seriously, you could do both, a history degree with conversion to the shortened 1year law course. But that's more the kind of thing you do to be a lawyer, and it's a years extra expense. Are there not courses more relevant though to the career that you eventually want to have? If you do seriously consider taking a law course, it might be a good idea to make sure that you do experience it somehow in a vaguely academic surrounding, so that you know it's what you would really like to do before making a three year commitment.

As far as Cambridge applications go, try, you never know, UCAS gives you five options anyway. There's more factors than UMS marks involved, especially for history and law, there's the HAT (or maybe I'm wrong and that might just be for Oxford?) and LNAT. It'll force you to get your application in early which can only be a good thing.

Oh, and Law at Cambridge is BA, not LLB.

Either is fine for both Business and Law. If legal career just take a conversion course, ideally one sponsored by a firm.

Business/management as someone above has said is quite literally so vague that it's not even something you can work towards. I'm working in a huge global business/company at the moment and you would be surprised just how DIFFERENT the types of jobs are that all fall into 'high paid business/management' lol. In view of this, the degree you do won't really matter usually.

Finally, why not just do a joint honours History and Law degree? But of course make sure it's a qualifying law degree.
