What a sensitive, thoughtful and non-alarmist post. I'm impressed.

 at least i've got my offer! Thats shocking! really??
Sorry, but I don't believe you. And yes, what thoughtful and sensitive post.

BUT if you are telling the truth then I may as well kiss my hopes of going to Durham goodbye.

A very good candidate from my school got an offer from Durham in January last year, so don't lose hope yet, Sian!
I haven't quite lost all hope (but nearly). I think if do get an offer it won't be from Mildert though, probably St Mary's (wouldn't want to go there really). Edit: Did this candidate get their first choice college??

I don't want to worry you guys applying for geog at durham but, i know someone who works there and they've said this year they have been massively oversubscribed for geography and said out of over 800 applicants they still have to give decisions to they only have 10 places left. so best of luck guys!

I am assuming candidates will be transferred to other colleges if they have places.

Lol, I love sentences that have a huuuuuge BUT in the middle! Its like "I don't want to offend you..." You know the next bits going to read "But, you're the smelliest person I've ever met, I wish u would crawl into a hole and die!!!"

Very tactful, nicely done! Lol!

This sounds highly implausible, seeing as universities are forbidden to discriminate against applicants who apply up to the deadline, and I am sure that many have not applied yet.

So, I think your friend is confused, and so i put forward an alternative scenario.

You friend is correct that there are only 10 more places available. However, they are places , and NOT offers.

Of course, not everyone who gets a durham offer will 1) accept it as first choice 2) make the grades. There are more offers than places available. The amount of offers given out is only just beginning to touch the amount of places given out, and there are many more available.

Therefore, there are more offers available to be given, as not to discriminate. Your friend has simply got confused between the offers and places available. I imagine that there are more than a hundred more offers available.

Thats my theory anyway.

Uni's are not supposed to discriminate against later applicants, but its common knowledge they do :frown:

Dont worry - last year my boyfriend sent off his application very late and got all 6 offers.

There are exceptions, but usually the people who apply much later have lower grades ..... and sorry to be harsh but 'couldn't give a toss'
