Unconditional offers

I've been seeing in various threads some people making the classic mistake of thinking unconditional offers are special awards given to people that do extremely well at interview. Just for informational purposes I'd like to clarify that unconditional offers are given to people who would have been given an offer conditional on certain requirements - but have already met those requirements. In the vast majority of cases, this means people who have already done their A-levels. So pre-qualification candidates shouldn't expect to receive unconditional offers - and post-qualification candidates should expect to receive them.

If Oxbridge REALLY want someone... they make an offer of EE but never an unconditional offer

Do you know anyone who has had this recently - it used to happen, but I don't know anyone who got one.

Yes I know somebody who was given an EE offer from Christ's for NatSci. In practice it was unconditional as he already had these grades after his AS exams. And this was only two years ago. The guy was a genius though.

That's probably because it's only Cambridge which still makes a significant number of EE offers -- I haven't heard of anyone getting one from Oxford recently.

Not quite...Paul had already completed more than the required 3 A-Levels for applicants, and so was given an unconditional offer. Not even EE!

That's a turn up, Mrs. Stobbs has said before she doesn't believe in EE offers, and so never gives them out. I know some colleges give them out for Maths, but Pembroke claim they never do. They may have changed that recently though.

i know 2 people who were given EE offers (they had not finished their A levels yet) meaning cambridge really wanted them.

ThePants999, yep, totally agree with what you're saying. i debated pointing it out in a thread but thought it would just look pernickity!

so the consensus basically is that cambridge give EEs now.

Oxford, as far as anyone knows no longer does. (though quite a few consultants i shadowed got them back in the day!)
i've never heard of anyone at oxford get offered an EE offer. i think AAB is as low as they're willing to go nowadays.

Hey, my name is Taha. I just joined TSR and this is my first post. I am an international applicant from Pakistan for physics at Worcester College, Oxford. Just wanted to say that the legendary Stephen Hawking got an EE offer from University College, Oxford back in around 1960.

Go to: http://books.nap.edu/books/0309084105/html/43.html#pagetop

It'll be an interesting read as to how it all happened. Go back a few pages if you want to read the entire tale of his Oxford application.

Well if anyone's gonna get one it should be Stevie H hey!

I think that giving EE offers is a very sensible thing to do. It gives the candidate freedom to explore their chosen subject and not have to worry about some of the more puerile aspects of the A Level course.

Indeed! Wow I'd have had such a great final year if I'd been sitting on an EE offer *dreams*.

But then again I have heard they get annoyed if one of their EE applicants gets anything less than a string of As. :p:

At one time, after you passed your Enterance Exam, they would givee them - the A-levels were not important. I do know people who got these (this was some time ago, of course)
