Stop Generalizing Things

I hope nobody will be offended by this post. If so, I apologize in advance. This is based on MY personal beliefs. Please, remember that freedom of speech is a real thing.

Society:

"All cops are bad" - People say this isn't aimed at all cops, but if that was the case, why is the slogan "All cops are bad?" It's true that some cops are bad. However, at the same time, it also discredits work from good police officers. There are some doctors that have killed people on purpose, but do we say all doctors are bad? No.

"Men need to stop raping women" - Rape is always wrong, no matter what the context is. Yes, statistically speaking women do get more raped than men, so please don't think that I'm attempting to invalidate anyone's experiences. All I want to propose is that we should say, "People should stop raping people" because anyone can rape anyone, rape has nothing to do with gender.

This isn't a statement. I will refer to a symbol that's widely known, which is the handicapped symbol. I understand why the symbol depicts a user with a wheelchair, and that's because the vast majority of disabled people use a wheelchair. However, I want people to remember that people also have invisible disabilities, so it's important not to invalidate these individuals or the pain they have endured.

These are only some examples. Please feel free to correct, agree or disagree with me. Remember, we can be civil.

I agree with you on acab, thats a huge generalization. But I dont see how saying that men need to stop raping women would be one?
I don't think 'men need to stop raping women' is a generalisation. A generalisation would be 'all men rape women'

i think its more the generalisation and the assumption that a: only men can be rapists and b: all men have been sexually violent towards a woman at least once in their life, neither of which is true

Yeah I agree, if it was all men need to stop raping women then I'd agree that it's a generalisation - but it's not. Men do need to stop raping women... women need to stop raping men too. I mean throwing either slogan around anyways isn't going to change a rapists mind but I get why people say it

the slogan doesn't mention either of those things. It just says men need to stop raping women. They do. Not all men.

Obviously that, but it doesnt mean all men. Like others said, its more pointed at rapists who are male.

Women rape women, women rape men, men rape men and men rape women. How can you generalize that? Men should stop raping women, but you clearly missed what I said. Please, don't think I approve of rape.

Please explain all cops are bad. You can't say that without giving an explanation. Yes, they can take the uniform off, but so can firefighters and NHS workers, but no one says that to them. The police officers that are corrupt and bad deserve to be punished and only them.

Fair point. I think it was poor wording on my part, I apologize.

Aye but it's not "male rapists need to stop raping women". It's just "men need to stop raping women". Imagine if someone started the slogan "Black people need to stop committing crimes"
Yes, you understand me, woo!

Yes but the issue with neutralizing the debate is that it distracts you from the real issue at hand.
Yes, some police officers are good. This does not deny the institutionalized racism that does exist in the police force.
Yes, not all men rape women but male-on-female-rape is a problem which is ruining lives.
I care more about the rape and the racism than about police officers and men getting their feelings hurt.
A chain is only as strong as its weakest link.

But thats still not saying men in general. Its like how people say "cops need to stop shooting". Thats not directed at every single individual who is a part of the police force. It is directed at those who do.
Okay, I would like to apologize for saying the example below. I thought people would agree with me when I said, "People should stop raping people" but boy I was wrong. I understand that the statement below isn't referring to all people, but why can't we say. "People should stop raping people" because this applies to both men and women. I hope this context helps. Again, I apologize for offending anyone.

These are some fair, strong points and I thank you. However, I don't agree with your point about institutionalized racism, but I won't get into that, unless you want me to.
