does durham stall on oxbridge applicants?

I can't see that it would make any difference for English at any rate... the offer is AAA! I was warned that Durham and Nottingham would both probably take a long time to either give me an offer or reject me... and they are. So, while I'm suitably impatient... it isn't unexpected.

i dont see why they would look down on u if ur an oxbridge applicant, most peeps at durham applied to them! The worst thing that could happen is that a few may turn down the offers if they have oxbridge ones, but that would only help them as they always give out too many offers!

she glimpsed her UCAS app in printed form on the table (on top of a pile), with 'OXBRIDGE' written as a header in small block caps. Now tell me they arent petty bastards.

They aren't petty bastards.

That tells you nothing.

See my post higher up this thread - they may be marking out Oxbridge applicants as people they particularly WANT, not necessarily people they're categorically not interested in.

I agree with Zarathrusta. I think all these stories of anti-Oxbridge applicants should be taken with a pinch of salt.

I think that around 80% of the people I know at Durham applied to Oxbridge- myself included. Durham would be bloody empty if it turned down everyone who applied before October 15th!!

Seriously, conspiracy theories are not helpful to anyone, as most of the previous contributors on this thread have pointed out.

It says in the FAQs on Durham's website that a third of their applicants also apply to Oxbridge, and if they were to turn all of these down then they would lose some of their best applicants {something along those lines}.

Complete rubbish! My friend applied on the 10th Oct (or there abouts, right before the Oxbridge deadline) and had 5As, got an offer almost immediately!

Your friend was lucky. I am predicted 5 As, sent my app just before Oct 15th and haven't got an offer! Some people predicted ABB have though.

Maybe they place a lot of emphasis on PSs? Or like certian subjects over others? Hmm... dunno!

I dont think they do place much emphasis on your personal statement. As I said earlier, I applied for Physics at Durham. Basically for medicine you get 4 choices instead of 6, so with the remaining two i applied for physics. My personal statement is all about medicine, I dont even mention the word physics. Yet still got an offer.

I think the subjects you do are given slightly more consideration. I do all the traditional hardcore subjects so maybe thats the reason.

The department will put little on your personal statement, but your college will REALLY focus on it. Perhaps a lot of the waiting is from ur college, not ur department.Your college is looking for something different about you, perhaps if you wrote about sport or music they may like you over someone who waffled about a book for a whole statement!
